I've been hearing recently that Trader Joe's now sells coconut oil. Has anyone tried it yet? Thoughts? How does it compare to the other coconut oils that you normally use?

I'm wondering if it is Fair Trade. I don't think I saw that on the label.

I was using sprout's brand on my skin til the jar was gone and loved it. My skin was clear and soft. I used tj's for a little over a week and my face broke out.

I have it, and like it, but be warned, it does taste a bit like coconut. I know some people like the coconut oils that are flavorless, and this is not flavorless. That said, I like the coconut flavor it adds to my cooking, and appreciate that it's so easily and cheaply available.

I wrote to their customer service folks yesterday, and this was their response:

Thank you for contacting us. The coconuts come from the Philippines but the it is processed here in the U.S. The coconuts are dehusked, grated, and the fresh coconut meat is cold pressed and filtered with no chemicals or preservatives added. This process retains the enzymes, lauric acid and all the other nutrients.

Our Virgin Coconut Oil is extracted from certified organic fresh coconuts without using excessive heat or harsh conditions in processing. No chemical is added. No bleaching is done. The natural nutrients and characteristics including aroma of fresh coconuts are therefore preserved. The result is a crystal clear liquid at room temperature (26 deg C) but turns solid white at temperatures below 26 deg C. It is pure 100% oil and contains no trans-fatty acid or cholesterol.

I bought some today and it tastes great. I was curious though since it was like wax does that mean it is partially hydrogenated? It doesn't say so.

i dont think so, coconut oil has a high melting point, so its often a solid at room temperature. – Laura Feb 4 2012 at 1:26
the thickening is normal if the room temp is under 76. – Moonablaze Feb 19 2012 at 23:46
It's not hydrogenated. It's saturated fat and melts at a very low temperature compared to other saturated fats. – Diane Oct 24 at 15:37

Is the TJs coconut oil also unrefined? I just bought a jar because it was organic and virgin, but i heard that you shouldn't eat it unless it's unrefined.

I believe "virgin" means unrefined. – Curmujeon Jan 15 2012 at 3:57

There is no such thing as "extra virgin" coconut oil - it's just marketing. For my opinion on marketing, listen to Bill Hicks on the subject.

Virgin coconut oil is indeed what you want.

They never have it in stock. It sells out too fast. Small container too. I could use like a gallon.

It is extra virgin, even though the jar only says virgin. Call the TJs customer service number and they will tell you. It's the best oil on the market. It's smells and tastes amazing, is organic and a phenomenal value. I won't buy any other.

"Extra virgin" coconut oil doesn't exist. It's either virgin or it's not. – Chris Feb 22 2012 at 17:57

Coconut butter is not coconut oil. Coconut butter is manna from heaven. Or maybe it's just heaven itself. – Diane Oct 24 at 15:36

Its virgin, not extra virgin. Its also from mature coconuts. I still bought it, and think its good stuff. For me just knowing its in a glass jar is important to me.

I'm a massage therapist and skin care expert, and only use coconut oil on my body.

If you cant eat it, then NEVER put it on your skin.

I work at Trader joes and never knew anything about Coconut Oil until we started carrying it a week or two ago. And it has been flying off the shelf! I found it that it was one of our most requested items before we started carrying it.

I haven't used it for cooking yet. But I have used it as moisturizer for my hands and I must say it is amazing! My hands and cuticles look awesome after I apply it and I don't have to reapply for the rest of the day!

For that reason alone, I bought myself a jar. Btw, it's organic and extra virgin.

Hope that helps.

Well, TJ's has grass-fed butter, grass-fed (ground) beef, and grass-fed cheese, so why not coconut butter? Paleo can take over TJ's--it would be so terrific, since their price point is almost universally cheaper than anywhere else except Aldi. Now if only they would carry grass-fed non-ground beef products--especially flank steak for jerky. – Christopher Gagnon Dec 31 2011 at 2:19
BTW, picked up two pounds of Kerrygold cheese today (all grass-fed) at Aldi for cheap--I tolerate dairy pretty well but stick with cultured/fermented. It'll last until late in 2012, so I'm not worried about using it up. – Christopher Gagnon Dec 31 2011 at 2:20
@Christopher, do you know if they carry the Kerrygold butter? I've only just recently heard of it. Typically shop at Market Street and they don't carry it. As for the coconut oil - yes, definitely try cooking with it! I love to use it for frying paleo chicken fingers with almond meal. SO YUM!!! – DanielleO812 Feb 4 2012 at 1:20
Someone should create a paleo/primal-oriented market. It's a pain to have to shop so many different stores, dodging all the junk food and vegan dogma just to find out there's no kerrygold, coconut oil or grassfed/pastured anything. – Diane Oct 24 at 15:34

I was buying (and liking) Whole Foods brand virgin coconut oil, and the jars of TJ's that I've tried taste very similar. Yet, it is $2 cheaper. Sounds good to me! I'd be curious to know how these stack up to the Tropical Traditions brand, which I have yet to bother ordering.

YUCK! Spectrum is the worse tasting to me--and total heartburn. Thanks for letting me know before I spent $$$ on it.

I'm not a fan of Spectrum either. I'll buy some of the TJ's but I'm not hopeful:( – Shari Bambino Dec 1 2011 at 6:19
I found it WAY better than spectrum. – Moonablaze Feb 19 2012 at 23:46

Get it! IMO tastes and operates the same as Spectrum, etc. And hello.. half the price and organic? A win for sure.

I had been asking forever, obviously not the only one, and I have to say they actually do kind of listen to the masses. Approve.

TJ's evil plan 1: complete. Now on to Evil plan 2: goat or sheep milk yogurt.

Bought the Coconut oil from TJs, haven't opening it yet though, really cheap though! Agreed about the yoghurt too. My TJs has some, but it has tapioca in it, I just want pure, probiotic, 20-hour fermented (bitter, less lactose), runny goat yoghurt (goat yoghurt is runny naturally). – Eugenia Nov 30 2011 at 21:11

My TJ's carries goat milk yogurt. – ROB Dec 1 2011 at 0:53

Excuse me please Rob, or ROB, but I think Eugenia and I need to know where this magical TJ'is. – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Dec 1 2011 at 4:11
ROB, the TJ goat yoghurt has tapioca in it, it's not fully pure, neither is fermented enough, to keep it sweet. – Eugenia Dec 1 2011 at 6:31
Mine doesn't carry it at all. It's too bad that they can't be consistent with stock in all the stores, I'm sure demographics play a huge part. Oh, well. I'll continue with my asking. – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Dec 1 2011 at 16:27
