Hi,

I went paleo since a couple of days and always tried to add lots of animal fat to my diet. Therefore I literally drowned every meal in fat. But later I noticed, that I was really bloatet, especially after the vegetable+fat combination, which leads me to the idea, that fat somehow impairs the digestion of the other things inside my stomach. So that the vegetables make it undigestet to the colon. Is it possible that one should only combine meat with lots of fat, but when it comes to vegies to use it sparingly? Has anyone experienced similar reactions?

Regards, Thomy

which vegetables are having this effect?...& what fat or fats are you using?.....the extra info may be useful – daz Dec 1 2011 at 8:53
No need to drown your meals in fat. No fat will not impair the digestion of other foods. – Sue Dec 1 2011 at 10:35
I'm using lard and goose fat and the problem occurs mainly with white potatoes and brussel sprouts. (I actually do not intend to lose weight, so I saw no need to abandon potatoes, maybe wrong decision?) – Thomy Dec 1 2011 at 11:48

From my personal experience - I had a lot of digestive / GERD related issues when I started eating paleo, but it subsided after a few weeks. I fixed it by starting with very simple meals (like one type of fat, 1 protein and 1 veg) and upgraded veery slowly to more elaborate dishes, but still usually stick to a minimalist plan.

So it could be some kind of transition effect? I already use very simple food combinations, e.g. brussel sprouts fried with lard. Since there is not a lot to digest, maybe the food travels too fast through the digestive tract? – Thomy Dec 1 2011 at 11:51

Fat slows down digestion and since you are eating starchy veggies they are taking a little longer to break down and bacteria get a little more time to munch out and give you gas. Fat is part of the reason veggies are good for you since many micro nutrients are fat soluble, so you need fat to absorb them into your body. Don't over think things and make sure you're downing liquids. I'm also envious that you got goose fat.
