I've been paleo for three months now and I have noticed some new growth. I have always had very fine hair that would easily break and I wonder if there are some specific foods I can eat to grow thicker, longer hair?

I believe Danny likes Pepsi and ice cream too remedy hair loss. Lots of orange juice too as I recall. – Shari Bambino Dec 4 2011 at 4:34

I've heard Biotin helps hair growth. Here, Fitday lists some foods that are high in Biotin (or you could take Biotin supplements specific for hair, skin and nails).

Bone broth.

Also regular massaging of the scalp to boost circulation and hair growth. This is what made a huge difference for me. I massage my head with coconut oil and leave the oil in overnight when i can, wonderful for your hair!

I'll go with "animal products" including liver, ground beef, egg yolks, and the like. Oh and rub coconut oil into the scalp.

Note that I'm completely making this up. But it's what I do and I still have hair.

That is what I do and my hair is great. You can also use aloe vera gel on the scalp as it helps clear the follicle. Silica is supposed to be amazing (the box says in six months you will notice a certain percentage of thicker hair), but I haven't tried it myself. – Carina Dec 4 2011 at 4:18

I think being insulin sensitive has a lot to do with it. I don't have any studies handy on that though.

Just wear whatever animal you had for dinner as a hat and no worries!

My hair and nails grow strong and fast on fatty beef. If I rotate in too many other meats, I notice a difference but eating beef/beef fat frequently restores the growth.

I'm an older woman with very fine hair, but I get lots of compliments on how thick and shiny my hair is and I respond, "I eat lots of good fatty beef!"

My nails have never been as long in my life. It's utterly amazing to me. It's the first solid "proof" to me that this diet is actually changing me on the insides. – Renee Dec 4 2011 at 4:38

Fermented veggies may help with this too, see #6—http://bodyecology.com/articles/look_younger_and_better_with_probiotics.php Since going Primal my split ends are disappearing. They used to look horrible. Shinier hair, strong nails, clear skin. Who needs Sephora?

suma root A French company filed a U.S. patent on the topical use of these ecdysterone chemicals, claiming that their suma ecdysterone extract strengthened the water barrier function of the skin, increased skin keratinocyte differentiation (which would be helpful for psoriasis), gave the skin a smoother, softer appearance and, also, improved hair appearance.

Suma's main plant chemicals are: allantoin, beta-ecdysterone, beta-sitosterol, daucosterol, germanium, iron, magnesium, nortriterpenoids, pantothenic acid, pfaffic acids, pfaffosides A-F, polypodine B, saponins, silica, stigmasterol, stigmasterol-3-o-beta-d-glucoside, vitamins A, B1, B2, E, K, and zinc

This is not a food, but using polysorbate-80 instead of shampoo works for me. Lightly wet your scalp while in the shower, then rub a few drops of it in your scalp for about 3 minutes, then rinse. Get the kind of polysorbate-80 that also has biotin.

It helps remove the DHT form of testosterone, which is the cause of male pattern baldness, not sure this applies to you.

Other causes of hair loss, are of course lack of nutrients and stress.
