Hello everyone,

I was hoping to get some feedback on my blood work I just received. I'm 28, I train jiu-jitsu 4 to 6 times a week walk about 15 kms every week, and I have been paleo for about 8 weeks.

Total cholesterol 251; Triglycerides 62; HDL 54; LDL 186;

Glucose 88.2;

I am a bit worried about my total cholesterol and LDL being so high. The low triglycerides tell me that I have been doing good as carb intake...

I have to go and see the doc on monday and I am sure I will be fed a lot of "eat less saturated fat". Overall I feel good and I just did the exams in order to track my progress (so I'm going to do more in the future). I dont have any exams prior to being paleo unluckily.

Any suggestions or considerations?

Thanks

Your triglyceride/hdl ratio is great, so the prediction is that if you had a VAP test done, you'd find that your LDL is mostly large and fluffy (so good). If I were you, I wouldn't be concerned at all.

Thanks for this. Do you know of any studies or any sources that related triglyceride/HDL ratio and LDLs profile? – Roberto Dec 8 2011 at 12:09
Wow, these numbers are so close to mine I thought I posted it! LDL - 86 HDL - 68 Trigs - 59 Total C - 273 I did do the VAP and my "Large Buoyant LDL" is in Pattern A - large and fluffy. My apoB100 is elevated at 122 (ref.<109) and am wondering what that means according to AndyM posting below. – Martin Dec 17 2011 at 20:22

I am a female late twenties and my doctor accidentally checked my cholesterol on my last blood test. My results: total cholesterol was 263 (rather high for a young female, which is supposedly the lowest risk group for high cholesterol?), HDL was in the 80's (great), trigs in the 30's (really great) and LDL was whatever was left (pretty freakin' high). So, who the crap knows.

I had the finger-prick cholesterol test done about 4-5 years ago and came back with a high result then too. No one in my family has high cholesterol, it's just me. All of this leads me to believe cholesterol is not the villain its been made out to be and quite frankly diet has little impact on its levels, OR there are non-cardiovascular reasons for it to be elevated (I have 3 autoimmune conditions).

I don't know what the point of this was other than maybe to say, don't worry about it even if your doc does tell you to change your diet (you're probably not eating white sugary things or vegetable oils if you're on here anyway).

I know there are better qualified people here to tackle this, but from what I understand the LDL number is probably wrong. It's typically calculated rather than measured directly, and the calculation isn't accurate if your triglycerides are low. You need to try and get it measured directly, or better still get apo-B measured. I don't think your numbers are particularly unusual for paleo diet, and total and LDL cholesterol are not necessarily good indicators of health.

Give it longer; at the end of the day you yourself -know- if what you are eating is making you feel better/ giving you more energy et cetera et cetera. Numbers are just numbers; there is a huge body of scientific data to support your lifestyle choice.

Unless those numebrs indicate you're in danger of imminent cardial infraction (:P), just chill and keep doing what you're doing. Put those numbers in a draw and forget about them; in 6 months time, have another check-up and do a comparison. That's probably their greatest (and only significant use) at this point.

Peace
