I'm eating here tomorrow night and just curious, if you were faced with this menu, what would you order? http://origintoronto.com/menu It's not really the kind of place where I'd want to ask for a bunless burger, but I don't mind making a request or two. I'm not great with onions (and to a lesser degree, garlic) and I suspect some of these dishes contain them so that's something I'd have to ask about.

I'm thinking the beef handroll to start, followed by the miso black cod ,which I love. It comes with soba noodles - from what I know, most are not 100% buckwheat, they also contain wheat. Do I actually ask the server if they are gluten-free?

I'm eating with a colleague who I'm not totally at ease with, so I want to be as least weird as possible. But she knows I'm Paleo.

I think most places, particularly like this, asking about gluten is socially acceptable these days. – AndyM Dec 8 2011 at 2:34
I would do as smartcookie suggests and call them ahead of time so you know before you get there (call at a time they won't be so busy). Looks like they have great options so I'm sure you'll find some great things to enjoy. – Shari Bambino Dec 8 2011 at 3:09
Fellow Torontonian! How was this Restaurant? – romesaz Dec 8 2011 at 22:32
hi Romesaz, I liked it - great food, good vibe, good music. I didn't really end up going for the ideas suggested here - I had a spicy tuna hand roll (which contained rice) and shared the duck tortillas (I just ate the insides, not the tortilla) and the miso black cod with my friend. – Renee Dec 9 2011 at 4:08

Tostones and guacamole, and brussel sprouts with bacon. The tuna salad. And the 32oz ribeye. Job done. Might be fasting the next day...

sadly the $79 ribeye is a smidge above my budget :) But thanks for the other ideas... – Renee Dec 8 2011 at 2:37
That was my list, too -- Tostones/guac; brussel sprouts w/ bacon--but I'd go with the Beef Sizzling Hot Plate. The Ponzu sauce isn't the greatest... but it's a treat, right? – Firestorm Dec 8 2011 at 15:50

Ooh. Raw oysters would be a serious treat. Tostones and guacamole, bacon and brussels, olives, fries, manchego (if you do dairy). I'm spanish and have had excellent chorizo, but it's hard to know what's in a sausage without asking. Cheese! Again if you do dairy. Chilled stuff! Lots of options here. Whoa, the ribeye - could they cook it in butter?

If I don't want to make a fuss, I'll call ahead so I know what is safe when I get there.

Well, this is obviously a nice place. I might call ahead to see if they'd work with me to serve a dish within my restrictions. Otherwise, I'd eat meat before I left home and I'd probably get the brussels sprouts and bacon appetizer.

Yes call ahead, the chef will know you are coming and be less stressed. Tell them what you are thinking of ordering and they can make it to meet your needs. (One of my favorite places does this, they substitute oil for butter, etc. But they like notice that I am coming) – Senneth Dec 8 2011 at 18:52

The beef handroll contains grain (amaranth), but I don't think it is a gluten grain. I don't know if that matters to you or not.

I thought soba noodles were just buckwheat flour, but you should ask just to be sure. You could always call ahead and ask about the noodles if you don't want to do it in front of the person with whom you are dining.

Where on the tolerance to gluten spectrum do you land? Are you gluten-free out of necessity (i.e. celiac or serious anaphylaxis) or gluten-free because you're "paleo"? Unless you're on the far-side of extreme gluten reactions, just suck it up and don't concern yourself with what is "paleo" or not or what is the most optimal or least detrimental. The fact that you're considering eating foods that potentially contain wheat and gluten tells me that you're rather gluten-tolerant.

But there's a 32oz ribeye! And sprouts and bacon! And plantain and avocado! This is a great place for a paleo meal with very little concern involved. – AndyM Dec 8 2011 at 2:59

I find wheat bloating but that's the only reaction. And a small amount wouldn't have much an effect on me. It's just that I've gone over 60 days gluten-free and everyone's telling me how it stays in your body for 30 days, etc, so it'd be nice to stay off it. – Renee Dec 8 2011 at 2:59
32oz is too big and too pricey, brussel sprouts i think might be too gassy (i have IBS), but yes, you're right, it's by no means an un-Paleo-able menu. I was just curious as to what others would choose. – Renee Dec 8 2011 at 3:07
