Canned fish is controversial , but remains popular among paleo enthusiasts, including Mark Sisson, especially canned salmon. Also, canned tomato products are popular.

Many are attracted to the convenience of ready-to-eat canned foods, especially on-the-go types who eat in the car, etc.

The safety can opener is an astounding product completely different than any other can opener that I have ever used. It opens the can at the top on the side. There are no sharp edges and the can can be used as a container for consumption, or, with the lid, an almost hermetic seal for refrigerator storage. You can then buy the economical big cans of tuna or salmon, which you might not always finish in one go.

There is a 2-step process: cutting the side of the lid, and then removing it. If you only do the first stage, you can then carry the can around with you, almost hermetically sealed.
(I put it in a separate bag anyway)

When you want to eat, you can remove the lid (even without the doodiddle on the canopener, this is part of my hack) with an agile flick and voila!

Drink the water out of the can of tuna, (option -- then add lemon juice -- yum!) and eat, nothing simpler and faster. Eat the tuna with your fingers if you want to feel more like Grok! (Even though this hack is super hi-tech, like you)

This item is not cheap, but sometimes you get what you pay for. I'm not affiliated with the company in any way, just want to share my hack.

Any other hacks to share?

I love the first comment on the youtube video. – pfw Aug 5 2010 at 13:32
Stephen, I mentioned that canned food is controversial. My post was meant for those who eat canned food anyway. Are any cans BPA free? – zohar Aug 5 2010 at 14:16
@pfw -- I read that comment and actually accidently spat on my laptop screen as I started LOL. – Patrik Aug 5 2010 at 18:30

Canned coconut milk is the only canned food I eat on a regular basis. I used to have a cheapie, no-name, edge cutting can opener that I got as a freebie with some purchase, and it was almost useless. I then bought one made by Kuhn Rikon, and it works perfectly; it also costs a lot less than the one from Tupperware.

If other brands are using the same method, great! I wasn't aware of that. – zohar Aug 5 2010 at 14:30
How much does it cost? – zohar Aug 5 2010 at 14:48

For $45 I will continue to move my canned salmon into another container or eat all at once. http://www.amazon.com/Tupperware-1298-E-Series-Can-Opener/dp/B00005S6IL

Understood. We got the can opener at about half that price a couple of years ago. Maybe it was on sale. I wouldn't have bought it either. But my wife did, and for once, she bought something worthwhile! Don't forget the feature that if you want to take your canned salmon for lunch, you can "open" it at home, and then at lunch just pop it open with your fingers. – zohar Aug 7 2010 at 23:00

This seems kind of cool, if you use a lot of canned foods. But even then, it kind of seems like a waste of money to me. If I don't eat it all, I just transfer the canned food to another container and pop in it the fridge. Cans kind of freak me out anyway and I wouldn't want to store my food in them once they're opened.

But to each his own. If this little gadget works for you, that's great.

I remember always being told, that once you open the can you either eat all right away or move the things to some other, non-metal, container. The moment oxygen gets in it begins interacting very fast with the metal and food inside.

Personally I can't see anything very special about this can opener.

That does not hold true for this can opener. It seals the food in, not at all like a regular can opener. – zohar Aug 5 2010 at 14:12
A normal can, once opened, cannot be sealed. Air enters freely even if you try to close it by not taking the lid off all the way. It's also very sharp and dangerous. But here it is a proper lid like any plastic container. I don't think that the fact that it is made of metal makes it any worse a container once its sealed shut. – zohar Aug 5 2010 at 14:22
With a normal can opener, you have to open your lunch at home in the morning, transfer to another container, etc. Then throw away or wash that other container. But with this can opener, you can just open the can, and it REMAINS HERMETICALLY SEALED until you jar the lid off, with no need for any other container. – zohar Aug 5 2010 at 14:24
