Currently, there is a thread on regarding alternative shaving creams, and a few of the answers are recommending cold-water shaving. Browsing the oft linked to Art Of Manliness website, I read this article on brief cold showers and I wondered about the effects of a cold shower on one who doesn't use shampoo? As a non-'pooer since early February, this made me think. While I'll probably end up experimenting with it myself, I wondered if anyone else here had experience with the combination of no-'poo and cold showers?

I recommend spelling it 'poo rather than poo.

poo makes many people think of feces, while 'poo will make sense to those who know that it's a short form of shampoo.

yeah, i'm in favor of typing 'sham' in front of the poo, but maybe that's just me ;) – patrick3000 Oct 27 2010 at 5:49

A cold water rinse is how I always end my hair washing these days. I've been told that the cold temperature smooths out the hair follicles, making your hair shinier and softer once it's dry. (as mentioned in the article you linked to.) I have indeed found that to be the case for me. I haven't used shampoo or conditioner in several years, instead I use a baking soda solution and warm water rinse followed by an apple cider vinegar solution. I turn the temperature as cold as I'm willing to put up with while I'm washing out the vinegar. Back when I was still using shampoo and conditioner, I occasionally rinsed with cold water. I think it still made some difference, but it wasn't nearly as obvious since my hair was always coated in whatever was in the conditioner I was using.

I've been without shampoo for a little over a year now. I tend to start my shower lukewarm (otherwise I won't step in) and then turn it cold once I'm wet. I'm not sure if there's really anything to the cold water thing, but it does seem to make my hair feel smoother. I also find my skin feels better when I shower with cold water (I don't use soap either).

But again, I don't know if there's anything to it or if it's just me. Try it out if you're curious, it can't hurt. Just don't force yourself to take cold showers if you don't like it. It's not worth it.

Every time there is a mention of No Poo somewhere, there are tons of questions and comments from experience. So, I thought it might be a good idea to set up a question and answer site to help beginners, and kind of let everyone discuss the No Shampoo/Soap lifestyle, and all the different experiences and experiments we are doing.

I would like to invite you to come post on our forum to provide info and experiences.

So, if you are interested, go check it out: http://beyondshampoo.com

I'm not selling anything, and I would appreciate people participating in honest, good discussions.
