Browsing health-related articles is a morning hobby of mine and today I was fascinated when I followed this link on the Primal Palette, one of my regular stops.

I was fascinated because

  • I have dealt with joint/skeletal pain since childhood
  • all but 2 (flax, walnuts) of the listed items are favorites and I have a long history of seeking them out and eating them frequently.

So, is this just a happy coincidence, or has my body been seeking relief without my conscious knowledge? I've certainly consumed these particular things to the exclusion of others.

Wow, interesting -- the only things on this list I don't regularly lust after are salmon and flax, but sub in sardines. And I've been dealing with inherited arthritic symptoms since childhood. – Canis Minor Dec 9 2011 at 19:41

I think that if you listen to your body's inner cravings those foods are usually what you need for your particular circumstances.

I'm not talking about the evil little voice that tells you to eat more dark chocolate, but the one that leads you to eat fish when you need it, or certain herbs that you may need for digestion.

A long time ago I read about a study where very young kids were allowed to choose whatever they wanted to eat from a selection placed at their disposal. They occasionally gorged on one particular item of food, but overall they ate a well balanced diet.

So how do you distinguish between the good voice and the evil voice? – Ambimorph Dec 10 2011 at 17:16

How do you know the chocolate craving isn't for magnesium? – Ambimorph Dec 10 2011 at 17:16

Given the voice power of addictive substances, I find this idea hard to embrace. – Ambimorph Dec 10 2011 at 17:17
Well if I know I have already had enough chocolate I presume the voice is just egging me on to make me overindulge. It is highly unlikely I am deficient in magnesium due to my eating dark chocolate and Epsom salts in the tub. Right now I am having a craving for sauerkraut and since I can't find it in our village in Mexico I am making some. – henny Dec 10 2011 at 18:16

The voice that tells me to eat dark chocolate is certainly not evil. – conciliator Dec 23 2011 at 22:27
