It's probably not a good sign that Don Matesz calls this 71-video series a "much needed critical look at the fundamentals of paleo diet logic as offered by its leading proponents." The author of the videos is an anonymous vegan who clearly had a lot of free time on his hands. I watched the first video and got half-way thru the second before I decided this was not something I wanted to pay a lot of attention to.

The production is pretty simple -- narration over still images (many featuring your favorite paleo-ites) -- but the rhetoric is off the charts.

Now to some questions. How much time does it take to do 71 YouTube videos dissing paleo? Do we really need 71 videos to discuss the essential point, which is are animal foods necessary? Is it a compliment that a vegan found it necessary to invest this much energy into criticizing paleo? Is it a "much needed critical look" at paleo or ~6 hours worth of "baffle 'em with bullsh*t"? And finally, does anyone have the stomach to watch more than I did?

Melissa's Edit: Just an FYI, but someone, I suspect the creator of the videos himself, has been posting "answers" to this thread from the same IP and different names. Please flag things that look suspicious. I have seen him behave this way on several blogs already and this won't be tolerated here.

Wow, Don's diet has really changed. Even after his "Farewell to paleo" post, he still recommended some animals products and avoiding wheat. Now his "hunter-gatherer diet guide" says to eat bread, pasta, and pastries and avoid ALL animal products. o_O – Phoenix Dec 10 2011 at 4:23

Pick one: 1) His site got hacked by some vegan nut trying to discredit Paleo, 2) He's getting paid big bucks to follow government dietary recommendations. I don't know how any sane person would recommend soy for omega-3 (besides natto, real tamari, which are consumed in limited quantities, which would not even be enough!). I have nothing else to say, I've seen his other posts. He's incapable of coherent thought. – a tricksty trickster Dec 10 2011 at 5:47

Read his wife's blog. It's clear who is influencing him. She feels karmically bad about all the factory-farmed budget paleo stuff they ate. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Dec 10 2011 at 6:25

Anyway, I hope they enjoy each other's stinky farts. Hmmm, farts! My paleo house will stay fart-free. – a tricksty trickster Dec 10 2011 at 6:56

The lack of b12 zombifies the vegan brain. As a result, it takes 1000 words to make a point, in a very long winded ramble.

When I reach the end of the proverbial line, I want to bask in images of all the fantastic things I wanted to do, and went ahead and did.

I do not plan to spend even an instant revisiting time I spent watching stupid-ass videos put together by individuals who technically qualify as homo sapiens sapiens but do not have a clue what it means to be a functional mammal of our species.

That's because I don't have a moment to spend, now, wasting my time that way.

Seriously, man. How much time do you personally have to waste offering critiques of junk?

Live this gorgeous life you've been given.

Send Don and the author of those videos a lifetime supply of soy and seitan burgers. Let the xenoestrogens and gluten put them out of their misery. ;)

I watched the video about grass-fed meat being bad the environment and it only really addressed it for a few minutes and it was all stuff refuted by Simon Fairlie in his excellent book. The ketosis one doesn't even begin to address the major reason why humans are good at ketosis, which is that it's a relic from infancy. All babies, even vegan babies, go into ketosis because without it, the human infant's giant brain would starve.

Overall, it's a pretty huge time commitment to sit and watch all those videos and they can't be searched and they don't have a reference list, which lets the author hide among the morass. I doubt Don has watched them all.

Aw, he's just sore that he and his tribe just aren't good enough to chase/bring down any prey!

I've waded through a few of those videos. The narrator had spent a lot of time building "straw men" to knock down. Many quotes taken out of context, and ideas mis-represented.

You're on your own with this one, Beth! Just from your question, I know I don't want to watch them. This lifestyle needs and will always need critical looks at various assumptions and hypotheses, but we don't need people who are just trying to convince us to abandon ship. If they wanted to publish a list of topics, then I might consider watching some pieces, but that's about it.

Anthony Colpo has responded to the video's specific criticism of his work on his blog http://anthonycolpo.com/?p=2719 It was specifically on the topic of cholesterol and its role in atherosclerosis, but there are some tidbits on other topics as well.

Many of us have mixed feelings about Anthony. He shares a lot of the viewpoints of this community and knows a lot about nutrition, but sometimes he can be abrasive and insulting, so I have to supply a caveat. You have been warned! Nonetheless, he makes good points and backs his arguments up with evidence. He talks about cherry-picking, epistemology, and how health science is to be pursued if we want to arrive at the right conclusions (skeptically and tentatively).

There was discussion on Denise Minger's blog about the video response to her, and apparently it was nothing but ad hominem attacks, appeals to authority, and other logical fallacies.

Thanks for bringing me to these videos, I was this close to going paleo. I know that paleo can be a healthy and balanced diet, but I also believe that traditional diets can be just as healthy. I really hated the "paleo is the only way" idea, and the other BS that comes with paleo like earthing, cleansing, supplementing, anti-cardio, ect. I'll stick with a traditional diet, limiting white starch, refined oils, meat, processed food, and nontraditional food. I wish you folks all the best of luck. Oh, an tons of beans! Love um!

Thanks for filling us in. If following anything this guy has to say makes sense to you then you are the one in need of the luck. I think traditional diets are great. Don Matesz is another story. Good luck! – Shari Bambino Jul 19 at 0:54

While not a vegan, its alarming when the Harvard study shows higher death rates in both non processed as well as processed meats over a 30 year study. Its also alarming that paleo people lived on average to 25 years. After the agricultural revolution(that included grains) people lived longer & were a staple of ancient Egyptian,Roman,Greek & Indian peoples. Plant Positive shows autopsies of Eskimoes who died hundreds of years ago(one a woman of 40,the other at 23) where arterisclerosis plaque was advanced & osteoporosis was starting to develop. While Red meat is alright in moderation what Paleo represents(fruit phobia despite anti cancer & anti heart disease qualities,legunes--xcellent anti cancer) is a fad that will lead to Heart surgery. While I eat meat Bravo to Plant Positive!

Most of the reason mortality figures were so low was because of high rates of infant mortality, which of course will bring the average down. Additionally, most of the dating of prehistoric skeletons is done by bone analysis, using bone thickness and density as a measure of age. The problem with this approach is that prehistoric people had a higher bone density on average (their 60-year olds had the bone density of modern people in their twenties) than we do now. You also forget that after adopting grains, people got short, fatter, and disease-ridden, among other things. – Justin M. Jul 18 at 20:53

Thank you so much for taking the time to come here and enlighten us kim. You should sleep well knowing you've saved hundreds, maybe thousands, from impending doom. – Shari Bambino Jul 19 at 0:55
