I don't vary from a strict paleo diet except for maybe once every 2 months. But I just cheated with a LOT of So Delicious coconut ice cream and dark chocolate. Of course I feel bad because of all the sugar but I'm really noticing that I'm sneezing a lot. Is there a reason for that?

its your brain trying to force the stuff out ;) – sage_ Dec 11 2011 at 3:53
I'd certainly take that as a sign your body didn't enjoy at least one ingredient in the treat. You have to decide if it's worth it or not. – Nance Dec 11 2011 at 3:54
After super clean/strict eating Paleo for about 3 months, I treated myself to a few bars of dark chocolate which had raw evaporated cane juice or something. I woke up the next day with several break outs. I don't even want to imagine what would happen if I had wheat/gluten. – April S. Dec 11 2011 at 4:51

Coconut ice cream and dark chocolate is cheating now? – AndyM Dec 11 2011 at 10:26
that would be determined by the ingredient list; no? – sage_ Dec 11 2011 at 15:52

I started experiencing with dairy (organic milk and cheese), chips (corn and potato), and oats.

Potato chips are an inflammatory food. Before paleo, I had lots of chest/back aches and pains. After paleo, the inflammation and aches diminished immensely.

After 2 months of a fairly strict paleo diet, the potato chips - I'm starting to think they bring back some inflammation, and make your stomach feel bloated (if you eat a lot of them).

Dairy - I'm thinking clogs up my sinuses. I'm still experiencing with it. I just had some milk and chips w/cheese. (I know - not the best. :P) I'm guessing I'll be sleeping with my mouth open, as my nose will probably clog. Not too sure on it yet though. I'll find out! :-)

I don't know if corn chips would be as bad as potato chips. But most people would say NO chips - I KNOW. I'm testing the waters.

Oats - I'm guessing full of starch and you don't really need them. Probably inflammatory, but among one of the healthier grains.

Dark chocolate - I actually consume quite often. It doesn't seem to effect me, other than make me feel good. I wouldn't advise eating a lot, and eat no later than 5pm, best if consumed before 1pm.

Healthy food makes me feel great! I just have to make sure I'm eating enough, because I have super fast metabolism - so lots of fat, and even upping the carbs helped me because earlier on with low carb I experienced brain fog.

I hope this helps some. Don't be afraid of testing different foods and how your body reacts.

The one thing that I probably wouldn't try cheating on would be gluten. It stays in your body for about 14 days. It's no good.

Haven't tried them yet, but rather than actual potato or corn chips, have you tried root vegetable chips? I've come across a couple recipes for them and am actually trying them tomorrow (will re-post and let you know how I liked them; using beets, turnips, and rutabaga). – CaliCaveMomma Dec 11 2011 at 8:23

Potato chips are inflammatory?! Did not know that...... I ate potato chips twice last week and all the back of my neck siezed up, it was so painful - Couldn't figure out what it was, have my answer now! Quick question - Why do you advise to eat dark chocolate before 1pm? Is there a scientific reason behind it or is it a personal preference? – Mashanshell Dec 11 2011 at 10:50
OK, so I failed miserably. Didn't have the right tool to cut them as thin as they needed to be and ended up just roasting them instead. They came off good then... Maybe I should have actually tried frying them... – CaliCaveMomma Dec 12 2011 at 2:33

"I don't vary from a strict paleo diet except when I do, and then it makes me feel really sick, and I wonder why, except I know quite well why, yet still I ask people for their opinions."

Do I have this basically right? I have my own versions of this question. I use them to keep myself stuck. So I empathize, with a certain impatience. But ultimately the impatience is toward my own game playing, of which yours just now reminds me.

Actually, if you just started out, I wouldn't advise cheating yet. Give the diet a good 30 days or more, then introduce non-paleo foods (if you really want to), and see how your body reacts.
