Have you found a use for SAD cooking utensils / appliances? Perhaps a breadknife, toaster, etc...

A kitchen tool is a kitchen tool to me, I try to multi-task everything I have:

  • Bread knife = tomato knife or for cutting anything soft. The serrated edge is fantastic and won't crush what you're cutting
  • Muffin tin = I make muffins for friends and for my CrossFit joint, using rice flour, potato flour, etc. I also use to make mini crustless quiches, egg cups with a bacon shell, etc. -
  • Waffle iron = use to cook bacon, hash browns, omelets, Paleo friendly waffles, if you have access to Mochi you can grill squares of that in there. A waffle iron is just a grill with divets - try it with a burger sometimes, it's awesome. All those little pockets to hold condiments.

I don't use a toaster, actually never owned one - always had a toaster oven or table top convection, but my parents use theirs to heat their weekly batch of waffles up in - just drop in to heat and make crispy. They make a huge batch one day a week using nuts, buckwheat flour, etc., and keep in the fridge to multi-task for a vehicle for a poached egg, a smear of honey. You could do the same with Paleo waffles..

Waffle iron? Is that for getting the creases out of your waffles? – Matt Dec 12 2011 at 14:18

This is what you use a waffle iron for: lifehacker.com/5405561/… – raydawg Dec 12 2011 at 17:34

I use the waffle iron to make waffles.

And I use the bread knife to protect my waffles!

80/20 rule for the win.

My stainless steel breadbox now holds bags of nuts and has been renamed "the nutcase"

The pot with a built in colander for pasta... Now is used to make bone stock production easier...

I gave my toaster away and almost gave away my panini press, until I realized it also worked great for salmon.

If anyone has any idea what to do with the pasta maker, I'd love to hear it!

Very cool on the salmon. – Eric Dec 13 2011 at 7:07

I've made coconut flour pancakes in a big batch - I'll stick them in tupperware in the fridge, and throw a couple in the toaster to give my kids for breakfast.

Some yes and some no!

Toaster Oven: Now used to reheat small amounts of food, and sometimes grain-free baked goods (cookies, muffins, etc.)

Toaster, Breadmaker: gave away

Quesadilla press, Waffle iron, George Foreman: gave away due to no longer using nonstick cooking surfaces - I cook with plenty of animal fats on stainless steel and soak in soapy water if need be so it barely sticks!

Perfect! Thanks Lady Arwen! – Eric Dec 13 2011 at 7:11

Outside of grilling, a rice cooker is good for everything. Poaching, steaming, scalding, reheating leftovers. It's the macgyver of kitchen appliances.

Welp I threw my microwave in the trash, a long with my toaster.

A good slow cooker is where it's at right now for me.

I make some awesome stews! Food just tastes better slow cooked, and the veggies / meat / broth all mix together well.

SADly, no.

I do wonder if the waffle iron could be used to make waffle shaped omlettes or burgers. I may have to try that. I can't think of anything for a toaster though...

Use almond flour pancake batter for the waffles. You could maybe make potato waffles if you add an egg to the mashed potato. – AlohaSpeck Dec 12 2011 at 12:48
Very Likely Dave... – Eric Dec 12 2011 at 16:04

You can use muffin tins in bathroom or bedroom drwaers to organize ewelry, cotton balls, hair scrunchies... or maybe screws, and things like that.

Hmm... I'll post if I think of more. But I just donated my stuff to a thrift store.

Great idea Luisa!!! – Eric Dec 12 2011 at 16:05

Bakeware I can always use to roast things like meat and veggies. Muffin tins are great for making paleo egg muffins.

Scrambled eggs, chopped bacon, spinach, broccoli. mix it up, pour into greased muffin tin, bake for about 12-15 mins. Breakfast on the go all week.

However, some things just dont translate. My toaster found the trash (it was pretty beat anyway) and my Kitchen-Aid mixer found Craigslist. I still have a hand mixer just in case. I have picked up a few blenders (stick and regular and food proc) and a crock pot.

I can understand getting rid of a beat up toaster.. . :-) – Eric Dec 13 2011 at 7:08

My toaster died a couple months before I decided to try ancestral eating and, in a rare flash of brilliance, I bought a toaster oven instead of replacing the toaster. The toaster oven does a dandy job on individual meat portions and is my grandson's preferred option while I prefer the induction cooktop.

The 2 items that lost their counter space are the bread-maker and the blender (I'm just not a smoothie person.) I prefer whole fruit and meat. Most other tools are multi-functional; for instance, serrated bread knives are wondrous on melons. The Soda Stream used to feed my carbonated water habit, although that's fading too as I love the fruit-flavored water kefir sodas I now make. The kid still uses it though.

I use my blender to make cashew-based curry sauces -- 1 cup raw cashew, 2-3 cups bone stock, 2-3 tablespoons curry powder... then I pour it over meat (ok, and sometimes vegetables) and let it simmer away. – Firestorm Dec 12 2011 at 20:53
That Kefer water sounds good Nance! – Eric Dec 13 2011 at 7:09
@Eric, you need to be off sugar for a while before you can enjoy the first brew (which I really do) but even my grandkid likes the carbonated fruit sodas I get after I add fruit juice and do the second brew. – Nance Dec 13 2011 at 14:56
Hey Nance, do you have recipes for the fruit flavored kefir? Thanks – Sue Holt Jan 29 2012 at 14:49
@Sue, if you use the link on my profile, just click on the label water-kefir. Thanks for asking! – Nance Jan 29 2012 at 16:04

Don't laugh, but we never owned a toaster or microwave - I simply wouldn't allow it. We have a toaster oven (if anyone else wanted toast). So there aren't issues with "SAD utensils".

The muffin tins, I make the egg-muffins w/veg/meat. The toaster oven is still used as it always was. Never owned a waffle maker or any "one purpose" utensil/appliance. If it can't multi-task, I have no use for it. I have no issue frying or baking bacon myself - it gives me time to clean up the kitchen while it's cooking. (B/c I'm a multi-tasker too!).

My fave piece has got to be the slow cooker - always has been. :)
