Ok, you've got easy things like the superiority of grass-fed beef, but this was actually inspired by getting raw honeycomb because, well, that's how honey should come. And boy is it a world better than even the good pots of 'extracted' honey. Any other lesser-talked about natural forms of food that make you wonder why anyone ever thought to eat it differently?

This is how I feel about raw meat. – Marnee Dec 13 2011 at 19:44

Like Curmujeon, I'd say pretty much everything. I pick up flavors that are more subtle and I enjoy non-sweet flavors much more.

Meat, for instance, now tastes pretty sweet. Once-sour grapefruit tastes very sweet. Rich-colored leaf lettuce has a distinct flavor that I like but never sensed before. I could barely tolerate coffee with CoffeeMate before but now I can taste differences in various types of black coffee. A nice slow-cooked stew has layers of flavor and they're all yummy.

I have to say the best thing of all so far was a ripe red plum last summer. That thing exploded in my mouth and tasted better than any dessert I've ever had.

Yes! Can't believe I used to sprinkle white sugar on pink grapefruit. Of course I also sprinkled it on my Cheerios because my mom wouldn't buy the honey-nut kind. She was on to something. – Renee Dec 13 2011 at 23:22

Same here, Renee -- grapefruits are amazingly sweet now! And even lemons have a touch of sweet. Nance, I had that same experience with blueberries over the summer. I used that exact word: Exploded. Another friend that just went Paleo a month ago said the same thing about an orange. What a gorgeous surprise, to find that the actual taste of food is superior to engineered faux-food. – January Dec 14 2011 at 4:57

I would say I'm enjoying greens a lot more, particularly kale, now that I'm frying them in bacon grease or pork lard or coconut oil, instead of steaming them in my pre-Paleo life.

And really, bacon, period. I didn't grow up in a bacon household, so I always associated it with the smell of a Denny's. Now, it's like, just add bacon, presto amazeballs meal.

Yes! Kale in bacon grease -- oh man. Heaaaaaven. – January Dec 14 2011 at 4:59
Try frying up broccoli rabe when you can find it. Classic Philly and NYC staple. – thhq Dec 14 2011 at 14:38

Mayonnaise. I know it's not a whole food, but I was already eating grassfed/pastured meats and local/organic fruits and veggies before switching to a paleo diet. But I didn't try making my own mayonnaise until more recently. After tasting homemade mayo I can't imagine why anyone ever buys the stuff at the store. There is just no comparison.

Okay, Kewpie, you've inspired me and I'm going to have to give this a try. I've been chicken 'til now. – Nance Dec 14 2011 at 3:58
Good call kewpie, I'd never liked mayo and avoided it as unhealthy anyway, but my own is a whole different thing. – AndyM Dec 14 2011 at 10:27
Kewpie, what kind of oil do you use? I made it once with grapeseed since it has a more mild flavor....but that was before I knew that some paleo'ers avoid grapeseed oil. – Ruth Dec 14 2011 at 13:56
I use a blend of olive oil and coconut oil (in the winter I warm the coconut oil with hot water to liquify). The nice thing about using coconut oil is that even if you don't do it perfectly and it is a little bit runny it will firm up in the fridge. – Kewpie Dec 14 2011 at 15:59

Everything! I'm not eating 100% organic, grass fed, but those choices are always better than the alternative. Even the Red Delicious apple is consistently better when purchased locally grown or organic. Anybody tried the organic agave nectar yet?

i don't think agave is paleo... – Renee Dec 13 2011 at 23:20

Agave is pretty bad as a sugar. Try raw & unfiltered local honey instead. It's much more healthy because of all the "active" ingredients in it. – Eugenia Dec 14 2011 at 2:50
I'm eating more like 0% grasslot beef and what normal pig doesn't eat corn? But my seafood is 100% fed on whatever drifted in with the tide. – thhq Dec 14 2011 at 14:42

I find myself enjoying broccoli, kale, asparagus and cauliflower like they're Scooby Snacks. So good. Who knew?

Aren't Scoobie Snacks meat chunks? I'm hooked on beet greens and chard, and you've reminded me of what to do with that sausage in the freezer. – thhq Dec 14 2011 at 14:34
Yep. And that's how enjoyable I find veggies these days. As awesome (well, ok, almost) as meat chunks. Mmm, meat chunks... – January Dec 15 2011 at 7:54

For me it's things like bacon and eggs or veggies cooked in fats. Not that that stuff actually tastes different, but now I truly enjoy it. Before, when I thought fat and grease was bad, I rarely ate these things, and when I did I couldn't enjoy it because I felt super guilty about it because it wasn't "healthy."

Now, I savor foods like these because it tastes good AND it's good for me.

Butter. I never cared much for butter until I tasted the natural stuff from grass-fed cows.

Clams taste better. Crab tastes better. Wild chinook salmon tastes better.

These are ancestral foods. Their fossils are concreted in banks near where I live. Whether a cow is fed on a grasslot or a feedlot it's a Neolithic processed food. No cow fossils.

Aw, c'mon! Cows have horns, they just remove them and there are plenty of fossil skulls with horns. :-)) – Nance Dec 13 2011 at 20:31

If somebody draws a gun on my 5 lb chub, I draw on his richierich burger. If I don't, the next thing I know he'll be dissing my bacon. Paleo isn't the sport of kings. – thhq Dec 13 2011 at 21:10
I know lowlifes who used to steal cedar to pay their fines for digging clams without a license... – thhq Dec 13 2011 at 21:12

It seems like everything tastes better. I feel like I am constantly going "MMMMMMM OMG THIS IS THE BEST THING I EVER ATE" all the time.

But particularly, dark chocolate and Bubbie's pickles. I used to think they were gross, and then last week I ate an entire jar in 2 days.
