I went Paleo about a year ago to combat diabetes. Now I don't take anything for diabetes and my sugar is completely under control. Lately, I've noticed a lot tightness in my chest and I feel like I'm the verge of a heart attack. Should I go back to eating oatmeal/whole grains to prevent a heart attack?

Are you doing VLC? – Annie Dec 13 2011 at 19:28

You think you might be having a heart attack and you are asking about eating oatmeal? – Marnee Dec 13 2011 at 19:41
Don't go back to the GRUEL! – Curmujeon Dec 13 2011 at 19:46
Clearly, I made the mistake of thinking that if he is on Paleohacks, he is not truly feeling like he's having a heart attack. I shouldn't have ASSumed that. – Annie Dec 13 2011 at 19:54

If you have these possibly life-threatening symptoms, you need to get off paleohacks and see a doctor. If you really are having heart problems, adding in oatmeal now is not going to do anything (even if it ever would), since oatmeal supposedly promotes heart health by slowly lowering cholesterol. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Dec 13 2011 at 20:27

I would get yourself to a doctor to have that checked out instead of asking random people on the internet.

That's what I'd do too! Even if tests confirm a problem, I don't know that oatmeal would be the answer but let's talk after the doctors check you out and give their opinions. – Nance Dec 13 2011 at 19:35
Definitely something to get checked out. For those doing it right this is not a common problem. – Curmujeon Dec 13 2011 at 19:38
Just don't want to see an SAD doc recommend an SAD diet to "solve" this problem. Adding in good quality carbs can help if VLC is the cause. – Annie Dec 13 2011 at 19:39

The thing is, Annie, he should make sure his EKG is okay before adjusting his diet. – Nance Dec 13 2011 at 19:42

If you've already been checked out, try adding some good Paleo carbs such as sweet potatoes and supplement with magnesium. – Annie Dec 13 2011 at 20:19

Do you have a history of gallbladder problems? Is the tightening you're feeling be a sharp or tearing sensation?

Speaking from personal experience, the only time I thought I was having a heart attack it turned out to be a gallbladder attack. I was mis-diagnosed at first. They knew it wasn't my heart but they though it was spasms of my esophagus. A few weeks later,I got a huge gallstone caught in my liver duct--I turned a lovely yellow with bright gold specks and wound up in the emergency room. They said it probably got caught during the earlier pain but released again before getting stuck for good.

Health vs health? A tricky dilemma, but I would not recommend eating unhealthily to resolve it.
