The butter shortage in Norway is all over the news. All of the sources I've seen say a "low-carb, high-fat fad diet" is responsible for the surge in demand for butter. Is that true? What's really going on there?

Well, to brighten things up a little bit: YES, we are short of butter. YES, LCHF is getting more popular, BUT The harvest was not good this year. We had a lot of rain, resulting in less fat in the milk. Some farmers actually have extra milk, but is not allowed to deliver it to the dairy producers because of the it is above their allowd quota (a system that will be reconsidered soon I guess). Combine the small increase in butter consumption with the bad harvest, and you'll end up with a shortage of butter. Add on the fact that everybody in Norway bakes their own christmas cakes/cookies, and you'll understand why people will give an extra effort to get some butter. This is sort of news media loves, and it has been blown out of all porportions. I find it kind of hillarious. I guess the need to pick on others abnormalities is high when you need to divert the attention from your own country's financial crisis :) Norwegian. |

Press coverage of the shortage blames a combination of low-carb diet popularity and Christmas baking. EDIT: Sorry if the above is confusing, apparently many people increased their use of butter this year because they changed to low-carb PLUS other people want extra butter for baking PLUS there was reduced milk production due to a summer drought so 3 factors are involved. |
