The butter shortage in Norway is all over the news. All of the sources I've seen say a "low-carb, high-fat fad diet" is responsible for the surge in demand for butter. Is that true? What's really going on there?

LCHF "paleo" is merely Atkins dressed up in a loin cloth. – Travis Culp Dec 14 2011 at 22:09

Well, to brighten things up a little bit:

YES, we are short of butter.

YES, LCHF is getting more popular,

BUT

The harvest was not good this year. We had a lot of rain, resulting in less fat in the milk. Some farmers actually have extra milk, but is not allowed to deliver it to the dairy producers because of the it is above their allowd quota (a system that will be reconsidered soon I guess).

Combine the small increase in butter consumption with the bad harvest, and you'll end up with a shortage of butter. Add on the fact that everybody in Norway bakes their own christmas cakes/cookies, and you'll understand why people will give an extra effort to get some butter. This is sort of news media loves, and it has been blown out of all porportions.

I find it kind of hillarious. I guess the need to pick on others abnormalities is high when you need to divert the attention from your own country's financial crisis :)

Norwegian.

Excellent response! And yes...our country's financial crisis is depressing enough to nose our way into the Norwegian diet lol. Its nice to take our minds off of it anyway :) – McMeghann Dec 14 2011 at 21:57
I was not referring to the US alone. The news has gone around the world. – Lars Dec 14 2011 at 22:34

LCHF (low carb high fat) diets ala Andreas Eenfeldt are all the rage there.

Ah-hah! Eenfeldt's LCHF diet is the Paleo Diet under a different name. Here's his explanation on his website: dietdoctor.com/lchf#theory The Scandinavians seem to do everything right. What the hell is wrong with Holland? ;-) – Brent Dec 14 2011 at 19:29

There's something rotten in Denmark. – Dave S. Dec 14 2011 at 20:37
Nah, not really paleo. LC != paleo. I don't think his theory mentioned PUFAs/Omega6-Omega3 balance. It is just Atkins with a tacked on claim that humans are not evolved to eat that many carbs. – Paleo2.0 Dec 14 2011 at 20:50

Press coverage of the shortage blames a combination of low-carb diet popularity and Christmas baking.

EDIT: Sorry if the above is confusing, apparently many people increased their use of butter this year because they changed to low-carb PLUS other people want extra butter for baking PLUS there was reduced milk production due to a summer drought so 3 factors are involved.

That doesn't make much sense. Baking & low-carb don't really go together. Christmas baking is taking place in many countries, but only Norway ran out of butter. I'm hoping that someone who actually lives in Norway will see this and explain what the "fad diet" being reported is really about. – Brent Dec 14 2011 at 19:22
4 factors: socialism (quotas) – Paul Dec 14 2011 at 20:44
Dear Paul, can you tell me how socialism is related to this? I don't get it, so enlighten me if you may. – Lars Dec 15 2011 at 1:17
Dairy farms are heavily regulated by the Europe Union AND by the Nations itself. Businesses like this react very lethargic to any change in the market place. In my country they're not even allowed to set their own prices. It's just ridiculous. Countries like Denmark even tax sat fat, which affects dairy of course. I've never seen a shortage in electronic consumer products. Just an example of a more free market place. – Paul Dec 15 2011 at 22:58
Well, there is a shortcoming in comsumer electronic products everytime apple releases a new iWhatever ;) – Lars Jan 4 2012 at 23:41

I live in Finland and haven't heard of any particular LCHF things lately. Also, we seem to have ample supplies of butter around. Though, I must say, Finns do love to cook delicious things that I can't eat this time of year. – trentasaurus Dec 14 2011 at 21:06
All of this seems to be a media setup. That's been my thought from the beginning. – Paul Dec 14 2011 at 21:56
