I've been following the Robb Wolf paleo autoimmune protocol (no eggs, dairy and nightshades) and had some success with inflammation issues. When paleo folks talk about nightshades they mostly mention potatoes, tomatoes and peppers however after some quick googling I realized that goji berries and golden berries (aka gooseberries) are also part of the nightshade family. This is a real bummer since ive been thinking about including these two superfruits in my diet.

My question is... should I avoid these strictly based on the basis that they are considered a nightshade... or should they be fine?

Paleo AI protocol according to whom? Wolf? Cordain? Jaminet? And it would also depend on what kind of AI disease you may have. Plus, for inflammation, gluten maybe more of an issue. – Namby Pamby Dec 16 2011 at 3:51

They aren't super anythings if your body doesn't like them. Go big or go home. Give it a try without all of them then go from there. – Shari Bambino Dec 16 2011 at 4:51

I was of the understanding that nightshades meant ALL nightshades.

This "autoimmune protocol" sounds like another way of stating a low lectin version of paleo. It does mean all nightshades. Nuts and seeds are going to be included in that as well.

Agreed - ALL nightshades & ALL nuts and seeds. I have AI issues and I feel the best when I strictly adhere to R.W.'s protocol.

No. My energy is better with some carbs. I probably average 70 g/day. I stick to ones that don't cause issues. For me that means plantains, bananas, white sweet potato and taro root. I eat them in small amounts with fat. – paleoz Dec 22 2011 at 20:05
