I am 29 year old female, 5'4.5", 126.4 lbs and about 27% body fat. I gained a little excess after my wedding (normal weight is 118 but still about 25% body fat) must have been a food honeymoon! I have a small frame so that is how I can still pack on a lot of fat at 118.
Anyway, I am currently on a water fast and in ketosis and have been wanting to transition into a Paleo/Primal diet and I wanted to know how much fat loss can be expected in the first few weeks or month or so? I have done Atkins before and have experienced fast weight loss but I was much chunkier back then. Is there anyone out there with similar stats when starting Paleo? I would love to hear your feedback.
My girlfriend was a similar weight to yours before we started with paleo (maybe just a bit heavier). In the first 30 days she dropped somewhere around 15 pounds, which really was a considerable amount for someone who is ~5'4". Just a note, however, that she did not cheat on the lifestyle at all and stuck to lean meats (chicken and fish) for protein, no fruit, no starches really, etc. She was not exercising at the time.
I myself (6'4' man) lost about 20 pounds in a few weeks, which was enormous. However, my eating habits were horrendous before switching over (McDonalds, pizza multiple times per week, TONS of pop and ice cream, etc). I was also not exercising, but stuck to lean meats and veggies only for that time.
I don't know much about the science (body fat % and such), but I hope that is helpful!
I am 5'4" also and started paleo at 121 lbs. I was on it 5 weeks and was down to 111 lbs. Hope this helps. I ate no fruit or nuts. Only dairy was creamer in coffee. I didn't exercise but I did consume under 1000 calories per day to compensate. I also didn't eat breakfast, ate a light lunch but a big dinner.
My weight loss started out at a little over 2 pounds per week, now I'm losing over a pound a week. I've lost 142 pounds in the past 19 months. I'm still dropping but at the slower rate. You don't want to lose more than 2 pounds per week.
I have similar stats, 117lbs. Haven't lost anything but water weight after 10 days, but my shape is changing. My tummy especially is getting flatter. I eat almost no fruits or nuts. Judgment a taste when my bf is eating Otherwise it comes naturally to around 1700kcal per day when I eat as much as I want. Most of it in the form of pork belly, chicken thighs, salmon and beef flank steaks with coconut milk.
I'm 5'4 and started at a similar weight. In the first three weeks of paleo I lost over half a stone. I was eating fruit and for at least the first week I was eating dates and nuts everyday. I also was having a few non paleo meals a week during this time. I'd say if I'd been really strict I could have lost 3-4 pounds a week.
I wouldn't focus on weight. I would focus on measurements (thigh, waist at navel, arms at bicep unflexed, and hip), bf % (get a Hydrostatic Body Fat test done for $60 at most universities) and "before and after pictures".
If you focus on your scale weight, there's a good chance you won't lose much and get frustrated. There are too many factors that weigh into (no pun intended) your body weight on a high protien diet, especially when you throw in a training program in the mix (eg., shedding fat and gaining lean muscle for a net gain of 1 lbs is a good thing).
I loose six pounds of water weight in two hours during a crazy long metcon workout, so focusing on the scale is not ideal for me or anybody on Paleo.
I don't know that there is a "typical," though I lost 20 pounds in my first two months (which is what I probably needed to lose... still am at this new weight, one year later.) and my wife lost 14 in her first month.
Take the long-haul viewpoint and work on eating habits and feeling better. Something tells me that this will result in the best outcome and that you'll soon be where you need to be and you'll be feeling really good.
I'm 5'6, 205 and started on a pseudo-paleo diet 4 weeks ago. I've lost 12 lbs this month. I eat approx 90% of meals paleo. I do however, eat small quantities of cheese and other dairy, and every now and then have a small scoop of rice. I plan to eliminate these completely soon but I need to do that gradually.
I'm 5'6", 29 year old female and my starting weight was 265 lbs. I've been on Primal now exactly a week, and my weight has gone down to 254 lbs, so 11 lbs lost - in a week! I couldn't believe my eyes when I went to visit the scale this morning.
My ideal weight (taking account to my body structure) is around 155 lbs, so there's a lot to go, but this was a fantastic start!
