I have the classics and they get smelly soooooo easily. Does anyone have any experience with differences between models in this respect? I'm really curious about the smartwools http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/products/products_classic_smartwool_f.cfm

I had nooo idea they were making so many varieties! I'm happy with my sprints and my husband is happy with his KSOs! We just throw them in the wash when they get stinky. – gilliebean Aug 9 2010 at 18:17
Good question. I just came back from hiking in Switzerland with my VFF sprints. And the last days (of the 2 weeks), I really was afraid of getting close to people. Although I've got them for half a year, I never wore them so much, so long. And I have my Feelmax pankas for more than a year, but they never smelled. I wear socks in them though. Btw, VFF sprints in the Alps definitely get a lot of (mostly strange) looks! Besides the smell, I really enjoyed them. – Pieter D Aug 10 2010 at 14:13

Get some nylon sockettes and some cedar shavings (the stuff they use for hamster bedding) from your local pet store. Stuff the sockettes with some cedar shavings, and simply insert into the VFFs when not in use. Just shake the VFFs out before wearing to remove any cedar particles.

I've been doing this for my KSO Treks and Sprints for several weeks now, and I don't have to wash them anywhere near as much now. It's the best odour management trick I've tried yet. In fact, odour elimination trick might be more accurate.

I expect that I'll have to change the shavings periodically, but so far the first lot is holding up well.

I got the idea from birthdayshoes.com, who did a post a few months back on some fancy inserts they bought at the local running store, with nylon straps for hanging the shoes they're inserted in on hooks or doorknobs. I figured that a) I can stuff things full of cedar shavings myself, and b) hooks and doorknobs are Neolithic...

nice idea! my KSOs smell like Bin Laden's been hiding in them no matter how many times I wash them – crzydjm May 6 2011 at 13:21

Not for nothing but I avoid this issue with my KSOs by wearing Injinji socks.

I wear the Injinji socks whenever also. No odor problems.... – ChrisG Aug 10 2010 at 7:33
This also works for me. Additionally there is no unpleasant friction anywhere on my foot. – rook Aug 10 2010 at 11:32
I always wear my Injinjis (I couldn't wear my Classics til I got the socks, they rub on the back of my heel so bad! I haven't the courage to hack into them yet - so expensive and such a hassle to repair the hole that was in the toe when they arrived!) but in Summer doing so would be unbearable. I'm not a stinky foot person though, so beyond that I can't offer solutions. I've been wearing my KSOs to and from work every day for over a year now - they get sweaty, they get wet, they get hot, but they don't get smelly. Yet. – Girl Gone Primal Aug 10 2010 at 11:55
don't you need to get the shoes a tad bit bigger if you're wearing socks with them? – crzydjm May 6 2011 at 13:22
It depends. If you're right on the edge of a given size without socks, then you'll need to bump up to the next size. – kilton May 7 2011 at 18:56

I have the following:

  • Flow
  • KSO
  • 2x KSO Trek

I can't get the stink out of my Flow and KSO. I've washed both several times in a washing machine, and soaked and scrubbed them in a water-vinegar bath three times. When they dry, the smell is tolerable, but definitely there. After wearing them twice, the smell is easily noticable by others.

My KSO Treks only become stinky when they become soggy. When that happens, I wash'em out in the bath tub with warm water, and let them dry. They're good for another wear or two, and then they become smelly. However, I can throw them in a washing machine, and they come out stink-free.

I love my KSO Treks.

Note: I haven't tried washing my Flow or KSO with baking soda or hydrogen peroxide as Eva suggested. I'm going to give that a shot, because it sounds promising. – Nick Aug 10 2010 at 3:05
Oxyclean maybe? An antifungal/antibacterial is what your going for – Stephen-Aegis Aug 10 2010 at 3:13

I use baking soda mixed with enough hydrogen peroxide to make a water paste. Add a few drops of dishing washing liquid for the surfectant effect and rub around and rinse the shoes. No more stink. THis is the same recipe for getting skunk off dog so you can bet it works even on stinky shoes! I think it also helps a lot of you don't wear your vibrams every day. I have the classic vibrams.

I have a set of the brown leather KSO treks and a standard set of KSOs. My wife has a pair of solid black KSOs. We've had minimal issues with smell - and nothing that couldn't be solved by throwing them in the wash.

I've heard but not tested the kangaroo leather treks avoid the ammonia funk.

My standard KSOs clean easily with a little baking soda or vinegar

I'd love to hear about smartwool too

The smell seems to come from bacterial growth, which is usually worse with synthetics

The new treksport has coconut carbon...curiouser – Stephen-Aegis Aug 9 2010 at 19:20

A friend of mine recommended using denture tablets. We start the washing machine with the lid open, add the KSOs and a few denture tablets, soak for an hour, and then put the lid down to run the machine as normal. The tablets use enzymes to kill bacteria, so they are gentle on the fabric of the shoes.

interesting; I've heard from a friend to toss a couple efferdent tablets in my KSOs then put in a ziploc and toss in the freezer...kills the smell until after a couple days of wearing...might have to try in the washing machine – crzydjm May 6 2011 at 13:44

Though decidedly not paleo, I have had great results spraying my Vibrams with Dr. Scholl's Odor Destroyers Foot & Sneaker Spray Powder after each use. They remain odor-free indefinitely, although it's still a good idea to wash them periodically (to remove the powder, if nothing else).

The absolute best thing to eliminate odors in 5 fingers is mirazyme http://www.mcnett.com/MiraZyme-Enzyme-Based-Odor-Eliminator-P170.aspx I wear KSO's sea kayaking during the summer, literally 5 days a week, 12 hours a day of in and out of water, muck and sand. They smell absolutely awful at the end of the week. My boyfriend's (who worked the same job) were so bad they had to live outside. I dipped his in mirazyme (the sink filled with water and 2 drops of the solution) and could literally stick my nose in them and inhale without passing out. I swear its amazing. I usually run mine through the wash, then dip them in the mirazyme solution and let them air dry.
