So, I've basically been eating paleo for a few weeks. I mostly eat eggs, beef, salad, carrots, sweet potatoes, shredded coconut, a little fruit, avocados, salmon, and the occasional legumes/rice.

Dairy elimination helped the most in terms of my skin and grains/wheat/gluten also seemed to show improvement. Right now, I am clear sometimes, and then at other times have small breakouts. Are there any vitamins or supplements I can take which will help? My diet seems pretty perfect. I am currently taking fish oil and zinc. I have tried vitamin d3, and have tried taking it a couple times, but it seems to correlate with breakouts, so I've stopped that.

Fat-soluble vitamins¹ and magnesium. If you're not an anti-supplement kind of person, selenium² and a B-Complex might help too!

Vitamin D should not break you out. Are you sure there aren't any allergens in your supplement brand?

¹ especially vitamin k2 and vitamin A
² makes my cheeks very, very soft.

I was taking schiff d3, which said: No added sugar (sucrose, fructose, lactose), salt (sodium chloride) yeast, wheat, gluten or milk. No preservatives, artificial colors or artificial flavors. I guess there could be soy, in a vry small amount. I will try the selenium, A, and K2. As for sleep and my skin, I notice whenever I don't have school and am able to sleep in on the weekend, my skin is glowing in the morning and doesn't have any redness from old spots. When I have school during the week and have to get up at 6:30, my skin looks much worse, no matter what time I go to bed...it sucks. – Naleik Dec 18 2011 at 20:07
Hmmm. I believe magnesium can help a lot then, as it helps against stress. You should first get your diet right though. What does it look like at the moment? – Bruno Dec 18 2011 at 20:18
Good list. I would add iodine to that. – Grocket Dec 19 at 13:49

I don't have any recommendations for supplements, but I wonder if you've given your diet change enough time? Two weeks isn't very long, especially if you've been eating a SAD for 20 or 30 years. It can take months to see the full results as far as clearer skin. I'm not suggesting that you not take supplements, of course. I'm just suggesting that you may find your skin staying clearer and not reacting to environmental stresses as much in a few weeks or months. It may be worth retrying some supplements then, even if they seem not to work now.

well, I've been gluten free for at least 4 months, been off of dairy for over a year, and just in about the last month have tried to give up all grains. There is improvement each time, but I think there are still foods that should be fine that are causing me problems. I am unsure of tomatoes, potatoes, avocadoes, fruits, and some other foods... – Naleik Dec 19 2011 at 21:10
I slowly went Paleo also--over about 6 months--but I didn't notice many changes in my skin until I made a full commitment. After about 6 weeks of full Paleo I really started to see changes. It seems like the whole package was important for me. The second thing that's really helped sounds weird, but I stopped washing my face (water rinse only) and started moisturizing like crazy (mostly coconut oil) and my skin is so much happier! I actually get complements on my complexion now and I used to have really oily skin with red, angry patches of dry skin, plus acne! Yuck! – Heidi Dec 20 2011 at 21:10

I always noticed a correlation for me between breakouts and cortisol/stress (not enough sleep, and overtraining)

Good point! Not sleeping well is a trigger for me too. – Bruno Dec 18 2011 at 20:15

What helped me a lot was 50mg chelated zinc per day orally and niacinamide topically (mixed with witch hazel) You can take it orally as well if you prefer. I've been using these for several years now and would not be without them.

You might look at B5. Some report good results with that. I never tried it.

yeah, I've been taking between 50 and 100mg of zinc gluconate everyday, but it hasn't seemed to do much. Fish oil, however, completely cured my moderate back acne. I started fish oil about a year ago and zinc bout a month ago. – Naleik Dec 19 2011 at 21:09

I have had great experience with Turmeric. It is the spice that makes curry yellow. I has many many positive attributes, but skin support is among one of the most well known. You can make your own capsules or simply buy them premade. I think that Walmart has a fairly reputable brand. (Meaning not many fillers)

aw, alright. I have heard turmeric is a great anti-inflammatory. I have some not in pill form, but I can empty out capsules from other supplements I don't use anymore to fill them. Thanks for the response. – Naleik Dec 19 2011 at 21:07
