So my sister and father have recently learned they each were born with one kidney. I'm getting a sonogram tomorrow to see if I also have this issue. Does anyone know how this would change my dietary needs? My sister has been told she should be on a low salt diet. She also has too much potassium in her blood. I always thought salt counteracts potassium but she says you can't regulate it as easily with one kidney. Is this just conventional wisdom or in the case of one kidney is there something to the low salt/hypertension connection.
My sister already eats a grainfree WAPF style diet. She doesn't do much dairy except raw butter and small amounts of cheese, though she's thinking of cutting cheese out because of the sodium. Any insight? I'll know what my story is after the sonogram tomorrow but I just wanted to ask ahead of time since it could help her. (my father is kind of a lost cause since he eats SAD, drinks, and smokes.)
I eat high fat (<50) low carb and eat moderate carb about once or twice a week with winter squash, fruit, dairy or sweet potatoes. I breast feed and I find myself strongly craving lots of seasalt on my food. I don't get muscle cramps, though, I did when I first started (almost a year ago) but a little lo-salt cured that. I try to keep my protein around 20-30%.
