Because of the distance that my gym is from my house, Tabata, while taking only 4 mins to do, actually takes about an hour to get done. This is problematic when I get out of work late.

If you were faced between doing Tabata and getting to bed at 1030pm, which would you pick? Which is more beneficial?

I don't think Paleo sprinting ever involved a perfectly heated room surrounded by mirrors and televisions. Throw on a coat and sprint outside. Have you not seen Rocky? – Stefan Kendall Dec 20 2011 at 2:25

Work out at home.

Sleep now, wake up earlier and hit the gym in the morning. Or workout at home. Instead of the gym membership get yourself a bunch of dumbbells and an adjustable bench and go to town. Or ketlebells or whatever you're into.

Tabata jump rope!

+1 on this. Jumping rope is killer home workout. Or, do what I did. Get a 45lb kettlebell for swings and a 12#, 16# or 20# sledgehammer and an old tire for tabata sledgehammer swings....holy hell those are hard. – Frank Dec 20 2011 at 0:50

Oh boy, where to start? What else are you doing? What else are you eating? Why do you need to go to the gym to run a tabata?

If this is a regular situation, nothing is worth losing an hour of sleep a night for.

I would opt for sleep. A workout that late could keep you up even later due to the endorphin and adrenaline rush. I would agree with the suggestion to sleep earlier and get a workout in the next morning.

Screw the gym. Sprint in place, do mountain climbers and other bodyweight card exercises for legs. Others have mentioned jump ropes, and you can activate all of your leg muscles with various movements with those. You can do crazy tabatas with kettlebells. All of this equipment is far cheaper than a gym membership in the long run. Get thermals for praise running. This is all coming from a lifelong gym rat. Screw the gym. From didn't need it neither do we :) Oh and get your sleep! This is just as important as the exercise itself.

No tabata weight training for me fellas.... Tabata is for cardio.

Weight training = lifting heavy shit, so I lift at 90% of 1RM.

Swinging a 60lb kettlebell in tabatas will increase your cardio, don't you worry. Or just man up and go outside. – AndyM Dec 20 2011 at 0:57
I second the Tabata kettlebell recommendation. – Gazelle Dec 20 2011 at 12:43

Definitely sleep. I would not want to workout that late and close to you when you goto sleep. I agree, and you should wake up early and workout then.
