Looking for places to eat primal/paleo.... all over the country. Any info will help. Thanks!

Looking for menu items that are grass-fed, organic, pastured, or at the very least anti-biotic/hormone free.

Grocery stores, yes... that's gonna be number 1. What I'm really looking for (see examples: http://www.theprimaltraveler.com) is more along the lines of:

"When I was in Atlanta, I found a chain called YeahBurger that was a build your own burger bar that offered 100% grass fed beef as an option..."

or

"I eat at my local diner called ------- that has fresh organic eggs from the nearby farm."

Where do you go to eat that has primal options near your house?

I have looked at sites like "eat wild" (which is very limited and poorly organized) and it took me hours to find places along my route. Half of them were closed most of the week too. It doesn't make for great travel for cavepeeps.

I'd stick with pork chops at as local a diner as you can find. Especially across IA/IL/IN. Best pork in the world, but stay away from the chains. – thhq Dec 21 2011 at 17:14
Pork chops are traditionally dusted with flour before frying. So, I'd be real careful about that. Tell 'em you're celiac and will die if you have flour! – Soporificat Dec 23 2011 at 19:06

You can get a hamburger with lettuce instead of a bun. You can eat at WholeFoods grocery.

Chipotle is a decent option. – Dave S. Dec 21 2011 at 14:17
There aren't whole foods everywhere unfortunately.... – Devon Dec 21 2011 at 15:27

every time I go to whole foods the hot bar selection sucks. It's like, tofu covered in tofu, or a bunch of beans. :( – Lutfisk Dec 23 2011 at 0:24
For sure... You can find something though :-) I agree on the tofu :-) – Eric Dec 23 2011 at 2:45
I looked at the hot bar one day. Too much "stuff" in the dishes that a Paleo person should not eat. – HRHMom Nov 5 at 14:52

As a truck driver I feel your pain. I bought an Excalibur dehydrator and make my own jerky. All my meals except dinner are beef jerky, almonds and veggies. Boring, yes, but until I can get an normal job, it's the best I can do.

Take a spear with you.
When you are hungry, pull over (outside of towns probably better) and go hunting.
Cook and eat.

Simples...

Adds a few months to your driving time, though. – Dave S. Dec 21 2011 at 14:14
Exactly, Dave S. – Devon Dec 21 2011 at 15:28
Brake for deer. – thhq Dec 21 2011 at 17:10

Surely better NOT to brake...that way you'll save a lot of hunting time. – Gary Dec 22 2011 at 9:13

when i took a road trip recently, i made/took a lot of paleo-ish snacks in the event we couldn't find someplace to eat, we'd at least have a mini-meal of jerky, raw veg, nut butters, fruits. Stopping into a local market & grabbing deli meats/cheeses, boiled eggs is a handy option too. otherwise, in the company of others who insist on eating in a restaurant... burgers w/o buns, steaks/broccoli (extra butter plz!) at nicer places. with just a little planning, we never went hungry.
as far as specific joints that are paleo to eat at... g'luck. i dont know of any paleo-branded restaurants... I just tailor my order to my preferences.

You don't want restaurants, you want grocery stores. Go the deli counter and get some meat. Grab some pre-cut veggies, berries, nuts, and perhaps some greek yogurt, then head back out.

Actually, I do want restaurants. Who knows where the meat behind the counter comes from... probably pigs that were fed newspapers. No, thanks. – Devon Dec 22 2011 at 0:50

Find out in advance where to find compatible eating spots. Called due diligence, aka reconnaissance. Also, consider carrying a cooler with ice-packed edibles, and be willing to buy new ice on the road to chill food from groceries along the way.

This is my research, aka reconnaissance... I am also trying to make it easier for others... Gee, I never thought I could bring food with me.... – Devon Dec 21 2011 at 21:19

Picking up more spots definitely. Looking for as many places as possible. Where do you go out to eat and eat primally? What can you recommend in your area for even just menu items?

there's a lot of places that serve grass fed beef etc here in Ann Arbor, MI. The Grange sources local food exclusively. And some others.

Also Zingerman's roadhouse is pretty do-able. – Lutfisk Dec 23 2011 at 0:26
Just don't let them bring bread to your table.. – Lutfisk Dec 23 2011 at 0:26
and there's 2 whole foods here. Carson's American Bistro has a local pork chop dinner with a seasonal local vegetable. – Lutfisk Dec 23 2011 at 0:28
Also I like your website :P good going. – Lutfisk Dec 23 2011 at 0:28
oh and Deadwood Grill in Northville MI has a lot of game meat. You can get a stupid bumper sticker there that says "I eat my roadkill" or something. – Lutfisk Dec 23 2011 at 0:30

Bareburger in NYC. Can do lettuce wrapped burgers... grass-fed, pastured, organic.... So many options in this city. Still looking for suggestions from people around the country.

Where do you eat out in paleo/primal style?

Moe's uses grass-fed beef

Our Earth Fare grocery has grass fed prime rib dinners on Thursday nights. Grilled veggies were a side, but they also had mashed potatoes, rolls & pie (for those who have non-paleo people to please).

My fast food stop now is to get lunch meat and a banana or apple.

In LaGrange, IL, there's a restaurant called Back Alley Burger that's pretty good. You can get anything wrapped in lettuce. It's all grass fed, antibiotic, hormone, free, etc

Thanks so much! It looks amazing. – Devon Nov 5 at 18:47

Did someone say Chipotle yet? Because, Chipotle!

Thanks! I know about Chipotle. Not all locations are anti-biotic/hormone free... but every one that I have been to was. I will definitely add it to the list. – Devon Nov 5 at 18:48

Elevation Burger! 100% certified organic, grass fed, free range beef that is ground on site. Great lettuce wrap option that holds up well. Organic bacon. 6-month aged unprocessed cheddar. Fries cooked in olive oil. There are currently 30 locations worldwide, but growing quickly.

Thanks Mike. Got that one. I ate here recently... I love that you can order from the phone. There is one near my doctor's office and will probably be tasting their goods once a month! theprimaltraveler.blogspot.com/2012/10/… – Devon Nov 5 at 18:59
