I just found out that my 77-year old mom is having regular diarrhea. She is quite weak and underweight after a major spinal fusion last spring (112 at 5'7" + 2 of those Pounds are stainless steel or Titanium...) i was shopping in whole foods the other day (oh heaven) and saw kefir and right next to it, lassi. The lassi was available in a mango flavor so I bought it since i know she likes mango. But I was wondering which would be the better probiotic for diarrhea? And how much should she try at a time? (She won't eat sour things - she even sugars fage yogurt so I had to buy a sweetened version.)
They have a different balance of cultures--both are good!
If she is lactose intolerant, the kefir will have little or no lactose.
Also coconut water is useful for rehydrating and replenishing Potassium.
If you know anyone who makes a probiotic food/beverage at home I would recommend that over any store-bought product. Processing and shelf life drastically reduce the value of commercial products.
Sauerkraut, full-fat yogurt, lassi, water or dairy kefir, kombucha all should be teeming with beneficial bacteria if they are fresh. Among fresh probiotics, I've read that either dairy or water kefir provide higher bacterial counts than yogurt, but yogurt's still great.
If she's underweight and likes mangos, can you find her a fresh mango? That might stimulate her appetite and you can make sure you use the best yogurt available to you.
Jamie Oliver has a recipe for making a mango lassi with fresh yogurt.
If you can find cultures of Kefir in your area, you should do this. You might just want to make your own at home for a lot less $, super easy and you control the sugar content. This also allows you to choose either Water or Milk Kefir at will and what they process. I do both Milk Kefir and Water Kefir from my own Kefir Grains, if you need some, let me know? I mail them all the time.
