Feels like it is, full popeye style.

But really, what is it that a diet of meat, starch, and fruit is missing that makes spinach such a potent mood enhancer?

Spinach a mood enhancer? I used to eat a pound of spinach daily and didn't see any difference. – Bruno Dec 22 2011 at 8:31
I ate a bunch of kale over the weekend and I definitely felt better! Probably some deficiency corrected. If you are not deficient, it wouldn't make a difference... – Dave S. Dec 22 2011 at 18:56

My mom was on a raw diet and got an auto immune disease in her eye, she was eating lots of spinach and other nasty stuff. I convinced her to give up all that crap and follow a ray peat type diet and her eye condition cleared up within a week. She now claims that she can feel the negative effects of spinach when she eats it, this coming from someone who was practically begging me to let her keep eating her healthy greens.

It might be totally anecdotal but its a definitely a good reason to avoid spinach imo.

I never felt good eating spinach either. – rammer Dec 24 2011 at 19:52
Definately not a good reason, or perhaps not even a reason at all. I'm happy your mothers eye situation has passed; it serves no informative purpose. – cbucker Sep 25 at 13:08

Spinach contains carotenoids, antioxidants (such as CoQ10), vitamins A, D, E, K, B vitamins, trace minerals, chlorophyll, polyphenols, betaine and plant-derived omega-3 fatty acids. It is also alkaline which means it balances out acid in the body (which drains you of energy).

This is an actual reason, many of them in fact, and all good ones to continue eating spinach. – cbucker Sep 25 at 13:10

I once saw some spinach make a car disappear. No shit, Criss Angel style!

Spinach kills my thyroid function and gives me kidney stones. If its magic, its evil magic for me.

The B vitamins could well be a mood enhancer - excellent for the nerves - a bit like liver.

Spinach is an excellent source of trimethylglycine, which is critical if you have a mutation in your MTRR gene that prevents you from recycling homocysteine back to methionine in the methylation cycle through the normal channels. When I cut out wheat when I was diagnosed with celiac disease, I kept getting sicker and sicker, especially when I cut down on my spinach consumption. So for some people, spinach might be a critical component of their diet.
