i have noticed the skin tags i at one time associated with age are going away. could this be due to my change in lipid consumption ? i no longer consume fried vegetables or fried vegetable oil.

I used to get them all over my neck, and have also been pleasantly surprised by their disappearance. – Happy Now Dec 22 2011 at 8:45
I have a number of skin tags...recently turned Paleo - you have now given me hope that mine may disappear too. I am the eternal optimist... – Gary Dec 22 2011 at 9:15
Been strict palaeo for 2/3 years and i still have them :( – not_finbar Dec 22 2011 at 9:25

Mine starting going away when I went VLC in 2007; I've got zero now. I'm not sure what part of my VLC eating intersected with "paleo" eating; back then I still ate lots of PUFAs, etc. There's some association between pre-diabetes, insulin resistance, and skin tags, so whatever you do to improve those conditions may reduce their incidence: pre-diabetes.com/medical/… – Rose Dec 22 2011 at 14:34

My experience is similar to what Rose posted. VLC and following Dr. Harris' guidelines, as he had them in the summer of 2010, got rid of the skin tags in a few months. I didn't stop keep the PUFA intake quite low until January of this year. I find my skin, overall, continually improves. – PaleoGran Dec 22 2011 at 17:19

I've heard PUFAs cause skin tags.

Sounds like eliminating the ''vegetable'' oils got rid of them. :-)

Skin tags are associated with insulin resistance, so I expect its an indication that yours has improved.

Source? I've not heard that before. – not_finbar Dec 22 2011 at 9:24

Searching for 'skin tags insulin resistance' in Google Scholar brings back loads of studies. – Groketta Dec 22 2011 at 9:51
Thanks. Oh well, must be other causes too. Low carb does nothing for mine. – not_finbar Dec 22 2011 at 11:14

Well Jack Kruse i read the above and found it compelling. i assume the disappearance of somthing wrong is a good thing then. this diet is awesome and a life saver. i was truly dying at age 54. even if im still dying, im no longer suffering. – coprophagous Dec 29 2011 at 4:22

I've had some clusters of flat, medium brown warty growths on my abdomen for many years. Not sure if these are considered skin tags. Since I've gone paleo with my diet in August of 2011 (4 months) these growths have very slowly and gradually thinned out, flattened and become more like pale freckles; no more ridges. Don't know yet if they will disappear completely but nevertheless I'm thrilled. Plus, I'm not sure exactly what element of the change in diet to attribute this to. I've increased my meat, egg, and saturated fat intake, eliminated all vegetable oils except for olive oil in my salads, and I have eliminated all grains and legumes. Have also significantly increased my Vitamin D3 intake with a combination of more sunshine and D3 supplements. Overall, my skin is in much better shape in terms of its appearance: smoother and more evenly textured, redness on my neck has also disappeared. So there you have it from my experience.

A dermatologist told me that these are sebhorraeic dermatitis. Mine have also improved a bit - I put it down to replacing oils with saturated fat. – panteleimon Dec 22 2011 at 14:49

I had a few, and they appear to be gone. Hadn't really thought to look before now!

However, they developed during pregnancy, so the disappearance could be the result of hormonal changes not related to paleo. At the same time, I've always read that they were permanent unless removed.

I've been low-medium carb, medium protein & high fat for a few months now. Recently I added in slow jogging (as well as using more coconut in my diet) and it's seems like that is really speeding up my positive skin improvements. I had skin tags on my neck for over 10 years and now they are almost gone. I had a very noticable skin tag on my eyelid for over 15 years and today suddenly realized it is totally gone! I have a rather large brown skin tag (raisin sized) on my stomach that I've had for at least 25 years and it seems to have gotten smaller lately and is beginning to itch...this might be healing too?
