My partner and I had supper last night with friends. Desert was a pomegranate and prosecco jelly - large, and the arils of a whole pomegranate in each. Delicious.

This morning I checked on google the nutritional profile of Pomegranate and I was amazed. Masses of potassium (so hard to get in my FitDay analysis), magnesium, loads of Vitamin K, Vitamin C, folate, among other things.

As it is not a sweet fruit, I feel like including one almost every day - would this be a good idea? Anyone here "supplement" their diet with pomegranate? I feel like adding Pome, mango and kiwi regularly; will the health benefits compensate for any increase in sugars??

No, pomegranate is not an essential fruit. But you should definitely enjoy it while it is in season! – Beth-WeightMaven Dec 22 2011 at 12:44

I eat seasonally and with pom's in abundance right now I eat about 1-2 a week.. so about two cups of seeds in addition to other seasonals. I cook with them and also eat raw. Nutritionally they're a great package as well as being tasty as hell - they're one of my favourites so I jam on them while I can.

If you love the poms, and you don't feel that they will be preventing you from achieving any of your goals, then enjoy.

Note: Best trick is to clean your sink really well, fill with water, cut the pom in half then drop into the water and start to break it apart. All the seeds will float to the top and you can scoop them right up.

EDIT - Ways I use le pom:

Salad: Roast chicken, spinach, mac nuts. Root veg salad: shave beet, fennel, celery root, toss in the seeds and dress with a little neutral oil, usually avocado, and lemon juice. Sorbet. Make guac and add the pom seeds with some mango. Seriously, it's good. Onion, jalapeno, lime juice, cilantro.

I mostly use them in salads, or when I used to eat grains would fold them in at the end. Cardamom, toasted slivered almonds, pom seeds - really nice. Actually.. that would be good good with cauliflower... with some mint. Hmm!

actually, the seeds sink, it's the non-seed stuff that floats. I seed them in a big bowl of water to avoid those stain-producing red squirts as you pry the fruit apart. – gydle Dec 22 2011 at 17:28

@Gydle - weird, my seeds float. One reason why they don't last very long as I just scoop off the surface and into my mouth. Some of the other bits as well but mostly seeds. – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Dec 22 2011 at 18:30

No fruit is essential, but this is one of the good guys, so have at it. Much better than apples or bananas.

I am a pomegranate junkie. I used to binge on them like there was no tomorrow. This craving is over. But I want to tell you - it has something that my body definitely needs. In my culture it is suppose to be given to people who lose lots of blood - not sure why, but this is what most people believe about the medicinal properties of it.
