My friend has hyperhidrosis and gets sweaty hands and I've been researching using Google and it seems like iodine might be a natural answer to this? What should she get tested at a doctor and how does this tie into thyroid issues? Preferably the solution should be from natural foods, or some kind of supplementation.

I am a diehard paleo/primal person, no doubt. But, that being said, ive had seriously sweaty hands and feet my entire life. Eating strict paleo for over a year has done nothing to stop it. I still think paleo is THE way to eat and live. And i have seen myriad general health benefits, weight-maintenance, etc living and eating this way, but my hands and feet are still good and sweaty:/ Wish i had something more helpful to say. |

Eating paleo will not cure everything. There are probably genetic issues as well. Iodine itself is a tricky issue. If your friend has underactive thyroid, 90% of the time, it is autoimmune hashimoto's disease and increased iodine intake can actually make that worse as it stimulates the autoimmune response to higher levels. But if there is no autoimmune response and iodine intake and levels are low, then increased iodine will likely help. But before you know which route to take, the person in question will need to have the doctors run some tests on the thyroid. Also, if there are no symptoms of thyroid prob, just sweaty palms, I'd be tempted to guess it was just genetics. However, it doesn't hurt to have thyroid testing done since thyroid probs are common anyway, even if it does not turn out to be causing sweaty palms. Also, if your friend eats lots of table salt, then she probably is getting decent iodine intake already, unless she uses sea salt instead of iodized salt. -Eva |
