I'm trying again to quit coffee because I have issues even with decaf. I find hot coconut beverages serve as a satisfying substitute.

The one I drink is composed of hot water, coconut milk and curry powder.

Does anyone have suggestions for others? Please no suggestions that include anything that remotely has sugar in it.

Thank you!

Try adding unsweetened cocoa powder...whatever amount that you can tolerate the bitterness of. Also try adding a little cayenne powder. A small amount will give a hint of flavor, and a little more makes a nice spicy cocoa drink.

I really like this idea. Can you give me some kind of idea about the ratios you would use when making this type of drink for yourself? Thanks! – Stephanie Dec 22 2011 at 16:16
Maybe add some cinnamon? – Dave S. Dec 22 2011 at 16:18
Thank you! Spicy cocoa sounds excellent. – CheshyCat Dec 22 2011 at 17:17
@Stephanie, I checked what I wrote down and I don't have amounts for the cocoa and cayenne. They are just to taste. – Carl_Stawicki Dec 22 2011 at 23:18

There are plenty of herbal teas with no caffeine.

Coconut milk based chai tea with a healthy dose of turmeric in it. But without anything sweetening it, go easy on the spices.

Thank you. I'm actually trying to steer clear of caffeine. Maybe there is decaf chai? – CheshyCat Dec 22 2011 at 17:17
Celestial Seasonings Bengal Spice tea is one - it's herbal, with no caffeine. Gluten-free, but I know a lot of herbal teas contain some soy, so you might want to check on that if you're strict. – jess6 Dec 22 2011 at 17:47

I was under the impression that most loose-leaf chai is herbal, and does not contain caffeine. – WyldKard Dec 22 2011 at 18:25
Chai doesn't need to have tea leaves in it. It's pretty easy to locate just the spice blend, or you can make your own. Usually some mix of cardamom, ginger, fennel, cinnamon, peppercorn and cloves. Maybe star anise. I add turmeric to mine for the anti-inflammatory benefit. – syrahna Dec 23 2011 at 16:49
Why, thank you! – CheshyCat Dec 23 2011 at 21:32
