Hey everyone! I'm new to Paleo Hacks but have been experimenting with eating Paleo for a few months now. I'm 5'4'' and about 108 lb. and have a very active lifestyle; I feel SO, so much better when I eat Paleo-style, because I tend to feel super lethargic when I eat anything with gluten and/or dairy, but my weight drops immediately when I go for a week or so of strict Paleo eating.

So how can I eat Paleo without losing any weight? Is it even possible? Also, what are some on-the-run Paleo foods that will help really fuel me daily? I'm hungry all the time!

Maybe give us an idea of what you'd eat in a typical day when following a strictly Paleo diet... – Rogue Nutritionist Dec 24 2011 at 19:59
Consider that M&M's are the same size and shape as pills. Surely, you can take necessary pills on this diet! Swallow the whole with a glass of water if it makes you fell better. But do it where a bathroom is handy, because that's a lot of water for a whole bagful of pills every day. – Huey Dec 24 2011 at 22:28

Eat more......... – Stabby Dec 24 2011 at 22:39
Yupp, eat your porterhouse without trimming off the fat. Pork belly works wonders too. If you are OK with the omegas, Macadamias are your best choice of nuts. – Jan Dec 25 2011 at 2:41
What pills are you talking about? Vitamins? I eat a ton of fruit, eggs, and loaded-up salads. Usually have baked chicken, tilapia, or a bun-less turkey burger over greens for supper. Along with a huge pile of steamed veggies. – Olivia Dec 25 2011 at 18:19

In general, particularly since you say you are hungry, it doesn't seem as if you are eating enough. I know that sounds simplistic, but you didn't provide information about your preferred foods. You say you are active.

I would definitely eat when you are hungry and make sure you eat dense foods: fatty meat, coconut products if you tolerate them, butter/cream/ if you tolerate them, tubers for sure and a little fruit.

Your body is trying to tell you something!

definitely tubers. those "safe starches" are the way to go to maintain weight. if you're losing weight, eat more food. – Evan Dec 24 2011 at 20:24

Another vote for the tubers idea! More than just adding more carbs, they're pretty calorie-dense. It's hard to eat a ton of calories in just veggies, fruit and meat. I was accidentally losing weight when I started paleo and adding more calories (in tubers in particular) helped to halt that to a degree. – Mick Jagger Dec 24 2011 at 23:54

Don't IF - it kills my appetite and prevents me from eating very much, just because of the limited time window for eating.

Do go high fat - people recommend low carb and eating more fats for weight loss here sometimes. While eating fat does kill appetite and satiate quickly, I didn't lose as much adding fats to make it "fatty enough" as I did including safe starches and a little fruit. I guess you should experiment and figure out how your body processes things and then hack that. It's taken me a year to figure out that the high fat mentality works great for my well-being and maintenance weight but not for speedier weight loss.

Don't go too high protein - again, it kills appetite. I'm surprised by how little protein I need to maintain muscle mass and add a little more slowly - only about 80 grams (140lb female here). Eating much more beyond that is really helpful for weight loss (for appetite, metabolism, and repair) but not so much for preventing weight loss, since they displace carbs or fat (which are way easier for the body to use as fuel, keeping it from burning your precious tissue).

It all comes down to your body in the end. All of us have different bodily problems so we need different solutions to come to the same desire. Maybe maintenance for you includes IF (which is pretty healthy to practice) or something.

If you're at desired leanness, don't do low-carb paleo. Heck, low-carb paleo isn't even necessary when you're not at desired leanness level. Assuming you have no health conditions that require being strict paleo, incorporate potatoes (sweet, white, other...), root vegetables, rice, corn, etc into your regular diet.

I am 5'1 and 100 lbs and I also felt hungry and like I lost a couple pound the first couple of weeks. I increased the portion sizes of my meat, fish and eggs, upped my coconut oil and other fats, and introduced starchy tubers (roasted in fat or oil). My weight went back to 100 and has stayed the same ever since.

If you are loosing a few pounds it may be water. I agree with the tubers and more food.

Um, eat more carbs to the point where you get insulin spikes. Those force whatever is in the blood stored.

Too bad you can't do dairy, easiest way to put on weight is protein shakes. (Note I didn't say healthiest.)

Thank you for all the advice, guys! Are tubers = sweet potatoes? I probably need to start eating more meat, but I usually just eat beef/steak as a treat since I am a poor college student...ha!

Merry Christmas!

I hear you being a poor college student. I've been eating Paleo for about a year now and reminding myself that unlike my ancient ancestors I am training above a level for survival, so you're food intake should reflect that a little. To save money I buy cheaper meat and pour off as much fat as i can then add coconut oil or grass fed butter as a healthy replacement. – josh Dec 26 2011 at 0:18
