A few years ago I was diagnosed with vocal nodules, a.k.a. the kiss of death for any serious singer. I was devastated. For anyone who isn't familiar with the condition, it is basically when your vocal cords become callused from overuse or misuse. It can really degrade the quality and control of your vocals. My doctor said it was probably caused by a combination of irritation from GERD and overuse.
I'm dying to be able to sing again. Have any vocalists in the paleo-sphere healed nodules or vocal cord damage with diet? I'm curious to hear any thoughts on this one.
I am a professional opera singer, and have been since i was 10 years old.
(Full Disclosure: I have been on a 3 year hiatus because of being having "irish twins"- it's very bad for your voice to sing while pregnant, but am getting back to my "workouts")
vocal nodes are usually caused by (please don't be offended) poor technique while singing that causes stress on the cords.
think of it like a runner who gets a stress fracture
You will need surgery.
Although I have never gotten them personally, working to AVOID them has always been a major part of my vocal exercises. It's like working out the rest of your body, if you do too much too soon, or do something "wrong" or with poor form over a long period of time, it's not a matter of IF you will injure yourself, but WHEN and HOW BADLY
I would suggest consulting with a ENT specialist and starting back from the basics of classical vocal pedagogy: start with posture, breathing exercises, the italian books (Vaccai, etc.) (EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT A "CLASSICAL SINGER" IT'S LIKE GOING TO DRIVING SCHOOL AFTER A DUI, EVEN IF YOU DON'T DO NASCAR). start small. it can take YEARS TO RECOVER FROM VOCAL NODES
IGNORE THIS AND YOU CAN GO MUTE. I'M SERIOUS.
THIS IS SERIOUS.
ALSO: -BREATHE STEAM ONCE A DAY -ADD A HUMIDIFIER TO YOUR HOME -REMEMBER THAT WHISPERING IS WORSE THAN SPEAKING -AVOID DAIRY AS IT CAUSES MUCUS -AVOID OVERLY COLD BEVERAGES AND FOODS -WEAR A SCARF, EVEN IF IT'S "JUST FOR A SECOND" -DRINK A WARM SOUP OR TEA AT MEALS -WARM UP YOUR VOICE S-L-O-W-L-Y IN THE MORNINGS (WAKE UP A BIT BEFORE YOU START TALKING)
Hey! I know how tough it is! I found your question through a search because I have been noticing improvement for myself, and I wanted to know if others had felt the same way! I teach music and sing, and due to the stressing my voice at work, developed nodules. I initially went on steroids for about a week, which I hated, but helped and they subsided. I now use a mic when I teach and I have become more sensitive and able to manage any flare-ups.
I have been paleo for a month and my voice has improved drastically. The only two times I had vocal issues were the 1-2 days after Thanksgiving when I didn't eat paleo, and last week when I had a bad cold. Other than that, my voice is the best it has been in about 2-3 years...my students even notice!
It is logical that it would work. I basically cut out all of the things they say can irritate the voice, caffeine, sugar, etc. Try it out and let me know if you notice it too!
