Cooked some kale with double-smoked bacon as part of dinner for my parents last night. I hadn't been eating kale for about a week before this, and it's official, kale is horrible for me. Which saddens me because I love it so much, and it's so good for you. I was up most of the night with painful trapped gas, woke up on Xmas morning feeling exhausted, grumpy and headachy. Grrr, kale.

Is it because it's just more fibre than my IBS-y gut can tolerate, or is it a brassica like cabbage and cauliflower? Is it a FODMAP?

Seems there are so few veggies I can eat....

Sadly for you kale is a brassica and is a potential FODMAP food.

well at least that explains it! is the same true for chard? – Renee Dec 25 2011 at 19:03
I'm not sure about chard. There are a lot of less common plant foods that have not been tested for FODMAP content yet and so are not found on the food lists. It would be worth experimenting with at least once :) – Matt Dec 25 2011 at 19:15

wondering if you might do well with kale that has been cooked over 45 minutes.. murdered kale, really, but its the only way I can tolerate broccoli and collard greens. – MKS Dec 25 2011 at 19:22
Chard doesn't bother me- I don't think it is from the brassica family Renee. – henny Dec 25 2011 at 19:50

Kale is a brassica. Chard is not. Chard is closely related to beet and spinach.

Almost all brassicas, including kale, bother me terribly. But I can eat small amounts if it has been cooked to oblivion or dehydrated for hours (kale chips).

Try kale smoothies. Chewing doesn't break it down nearly fine enough. Add bananas for extra smoothness and ease on the tummy. Works for me.
