If so, tell us in detail what contributed to your health (other than paleo diet obviously). :-)

I've only gotten sick in the last 1-2 years when I've restricted carbs. Many do without ill-effects (so to speak) though. – Travis Culp Dec 29 2011 at 1:15

Its been great! An unexpected benefit of my lifestyle change has been not getting sick while others close around me are ill almost 4 times a year (or more). I have a special dance I like to taunt them with when they get sick and I don't.

I believe the main contributors to my health have been:

1) consuming local, home grown, organic eggs, veggies, and honey. 2) Virgin coconut oil for its antiviral properities. 3) More sex. 4) If my bf is coming down with something, I'll use some oil of oregano or I'll use some concentrated elderberry juice to kill off the infection.

No longer do I get that little twinge of fear when someone is sneezing or hacking.... its more like a challenge. I say bring it on! Show me what you've got! I'll crush you rhino virus!

Several times over the last couple years I've gotten a "pre-cold" - little sniffles or tightness in the throat - and then it's gone the next day. I haven't had a serious cold or flu in over two years.

In addition to good food, I attribute this partially to intentional cold/wet exposure as part of my training for adventure and obstacle races. I love to run in ToughMudders, Spartan Races, and soon my first Goruck Challenge. Many of these events occur in the winter and they almost always involve water.

As part of my training I've intentionally (and successfully) pushed my training to include cold exposure / resistance. I run in cold rain when I have the chance (last Sunday - 46 and rainy - out the door I go with only shorts and Vibrams!). I switched to almost exclusively cold showers. I keep a jacket in the car for emergencies but haven't actually worn one in two years.

I had a bit of a cough a few months ago the day before and morning of a Tough Mudder race. Conventional wisdom would say "drop the race, you'll get cold, wet, and tired and the little cough will turn into the flu or worse". I ran the 12 miles, including every water obstacle. The next day - no sign of a cold.

I chalk my and my wife's flu-free life to 5000-10000iu of vitamin D.

Me! (Unless you count seasonal allergies?)

I haven't been sick with a cold or virus in over 2 years. (Prior to that, probably 2-4 colds a year.)

I attribute this to getting my Vitamin D level up to the high end. (last test at 91 ng/ml) Also, using mega-doses of D and resting at the first sign of any symptoms.

I was eating WAP at the time I started supplementing D, I've been Primal for 14 months now.

It's totally the D that does it. Those with higher levels are basically immune. – Travis Culp Dec 28 2011 at 19:46

I get the flu about every 3 years, no sniffles or anything in between. Paleo has not changed this, I have been like this for my whole life. In fact my overall health, on paleo, is worse than it has ever been. (Adrenal, thyroid, digestion are all pretty awful). Yet still not catching the flu, I have even been exposed to whooping cough this season -and nothing. I am glad to be on paleo, but I haven't seen the health benefits that other people have.

I went WAPF about 12 months ago, and paleo about 9 months ago and I haven't been sick yet. I started getting a sore throat a few weeks ago when my son and my husband had full on colds but I loaded on bone broth, vitamin D, zinc and hit my neil med nasal irrigator pretty hard and dodged it in about half a day. I took this as a wake up call to be more dilligent about my son's vitamin D and offal intake and since I did that he seems to have finally fought it off. I think the combination of nutrient density and avoiding anti-nutrients really does make a world of difference. However, I think if you live up north where there isn't much sun this time of year, vitamin D supplementation is a must.

Haven't been sick in 10 years - apart from a mild seasonal cold some years -, and I've been paleo only since past July.

I contribute some of that to omega 3, been taking 10 (!) fish oil caps for years daily. I changed that to 4 cod liver caps with paleo diet. One of these days I'll do the math on what my actual omega 3/6 intake ratio is.

Another contributor is that I consciously avoid being overly clean. By that I mean I don't use any anti-bacterial products, only wash hands with soap after doing #2 or before cooking. I went no poo and no soap a year ago - soap only on my ass or if I get really dirty. At work I don't stay away from sick people, I don't wipe doorknobs, etc. I'm a strong believer in a strong immune system, and the best way to cultivate that is to get germs.

(Man, I sound like a dirty hippy, and I'm as far away from one as can be...)

Other than that, never been really one to get sick, so perhaps it's also (mostly?) genes.

Well, sort of...I haven't had any real sickness at all since I went paleo. I have had a few (maybe once a year) of what I call "paleo colds", where I wake up one day and I have a bit of a headache and a small tickle in my throat. It's the typical symptoms you get when you're starting a cold. But it never gets any worse than that and it's over in two-three days, rather than a whole week like with a real cold.

Now, when I do have my paelo cold (which I do right now, unfortunately), I do take extra care of myself, and that includes not going to the gym. I don't want my body doing anything other than fighting the cold.

The bad parts of a regular cold are all of the crazy immune response and inflammation, but since I'm on an anti-inflammatory diet, the only thing that a cold does is make me tired while my body is working on fighting it.

Haven't been sick for years. I provide my body with everything it needs to protect itself; food, exercise, sleep, relaxation, funtime etc. Don't over-think everything, enjoy your life.

Funny....right now I am sick for the first time in a year. All year my goal has been to get enough sleep and not run myself ragged with too much busy-ness. I have not had so much as a sniffle all year, only to wake up today with a sore throat and BOY do I feel cruddy. The only thing that's different is that I was super busy getting ready for the holidays and family in town, and I have been staying up late drinking wine with my family that's in town. Guess I've learned my lesson! I can't wait to get back to good eating and enough sleep.

I haven't been sick in 2 years since I changed my diet.. I discovered Paleo an I am doing even better!

Same here as above. Since going paleo over two years ago, I no longer suffer from the following things that used to plague me several times a year, apparenly mostly in the realm of immune issues: colds, flu, bronchitis, urinary tract infections. I've also been without hormonal cystic acne and my inherited arthritic or pre-arthritic problems (though I do get the occasional puffy stiffness in my fingers since moving to New England, it's nowhere near as bad as it was when I was a child). The only thing I still get, though less often now, is the rare and random bout of food poisoning, but even those are milder than they once were, and clear up much faster. The only allergic reaction I ever get now is when I get bit by these monster Massachusetts mosquitoes.

What's "being sick"? Is every malfunction of the body a disease? I haven't had a cold or the flu in 6 months, but I still don't consider myself healthy : there's so much to improve...

Well, I have to preface this with the fact that I've had a rather good immune system since my 20's -- Perhaps since I was exposed to so many kid germs from coworkers and such at the time ... who knows? But even when my diet hasn't been so great, I've not been one to get too sick for too long since my late 20's.

Now my husband? He's known as Mr. No Immunity around here. His diet leaves much to be desired depsite my urgings (it is getting better). But last winter something phenomenal happened -- he didn't get bronchitis once. When he did get the beginnings of something, he didn't succumb.

I chalk this up to bone broths. It is the single thing that we've integrated into our diets regularly that's uniquely different. I'm convinced this has kept us healthy!

I have been sick once in the past year, which I think was likely due to allowing dairy to slip back into my diet. It lasted a few days, whereas similar colds have had me coughing for weeks in the past, and I would have gotten several over the course of the year.

I've had a few bouts where I felt like I'm maybe coming down with something, but a few hours later I feel normal again.

I eat relatively strict paleo (grain, dairy, legumes, and industrial oils are very rare, but mostly conventional meat and some sugar), only occasional vit D supplementation and occasionally a multivitamin if I happen to think about it, and less-than-wonderful sleep hygiene between a co-sleeping baby and working one overnight shift a week. I have regular exposure to sick people, so it isn't for lack of opportunity.

I was doing great until I temporarily moved in with a disgusting SAD slob of a roommate who existed on fast food, boxed cereal, beefaroni, potato chips, booze, and apparently developed an allergy to both work and cleaning once my girlfriend and I were both paying rent there.A celiac trying to eat in a kitchen covered with Raisin Bran crumbs(he didn't wipe off counters,or actually wash dishes, just kind of rinsed them out after he used them) is not a good thing. We moved within two weeks of catching him doing that, and now people at work are commenting how much better I look. Not had the inkling of a cold, sinus pain,or anything besides indigestion after too much Christmas dinner since then. My girlfriend is being converted from a SAD diet to salads, soups, stews, bacon and eggs ect.I'll get her to drop the Dr.Pepper(she's cut back from two two liters a day in the summer to a two liter every three days) and vegetable oils one day.She admitted it is helping keep her from putting on the winter 15 pounds, and that her jaw/ear/sinus problems are vanishing.

When I had toddlers in the house they brought home tons of viruses. I got them occasionally, maybe a cold or two a year. Now nothing in 2 or 3 years like a cold etc. never get flu shots. Been paleo 3 months, strict for last 5 weeks. So I think part of it is exposure. That said my daughter in her 30s is always sick with some sort of URI, and I do not catch it. My husband had cancer about 8 yrs ago and was on chemo. We had to take precautions against infection and for the house that entailed strict hand washing protocols plus daily disinfecting of environmental surfaces like door knobs, faucets etc. and we stuck with it. Plus remembering to avoid rubbing eyes and nose in public places after touching shopping cart handles and retail refrigerator handles. Paleo helps boost the immune system I am sure but good pathogen control goes a long way. Day care centers are germ factories so if you have kids in them you get exposure to tons of bugs. When you are not exposed daily it seems to make a difference.

Haven't been sick in over 11 months. That's not quite a year. But I always caught at least one flu/cold/sinus infection each year or had allergic reactions in spring and fall. No headaches, either, which is a Big win for me. Besides Paleo (GAPS) diet, I give credit to raw probiotic fermented foods and daily doses of Vit. D3.

A couple months ago, I felt like I might be getting the flu. It was a slightly run-down feeling for over a week, and kept thinking I was on the verge of getting sick. But no, the feeling passed. Weeks later, it struck me that maybe THAT is how I now get sick? IOW, instead of eventually getting full-blown symptoms, I just remain in a state feeling like I might eventually get sick. So, I don't count it as actually being sick, as it never affected me like an illness, never bothered my sleep, or my appetite, nor any activity level. It was just that familiar feeling something was "on the verge".

Me too... and then my daughter entered day care :)

Yes! I've been strict Paleo (never cheat on non-Paleo foods) for a year now and haven't been sick once. I used to get seasonal allergies and had bad acne before Paleo, but all that's gone now...and I work with children.

Not even a stuffy nose!

I also supplement with vitamin C (100mg) vitamin D (7,000 I.U.) b-complex, fish oil (3rd party tested) and magnesium citrate.

Eat well, sleep often, and mobilize. The foundations of life.

Last time I got sick was around 2008, before then I was probably sick(with mostly flus) 4-5 times my whole life.

I've had a pretty good immunity since childhood due to my relatively clean diet and the fact that I used to play in the dirt all day.

I have had the immune system of a tank for the last 5 years. I didn't even get seasonal colds, or the sniffles. When I do get sick I get stage II pneumonia. I attribute my immune system to working with kids, and not being afraid of germs.

As much as I would like to say that I have been Paleo for the past five years, I have not. I eat as strictly as I can now; even did commendable during the holidays. The one factor that I think has made the largest difference is that I work with kids, hands on.. literally hands on. I teach guitar/classical guitar and my hands are touching ten to fifteen children's hands a day. Whether they were in their mouth, nose, ear... wherever. I learned that I was going to deal with it during the summer or winter and dealt with it. This shouldn't be limited to food/contact germs, but also around sick people. I don't know how many times I have had to teach a sick person or been around my sick significant other. I can now say that it is probably great for me. Now I don't go out of my way to avoid the germs, in fact I welcome it and it hasn't led me astray.
I know most of you would probably say that this would not be a healthy way of looking at germs, but it has worked for me.

6 months sick free, i used to be so immunocompromised i could not even contain shingles and had two bouts. i think its the diet plus the Vitamin C supplementation to diet. it is a medical fact the C boost immunity. Lower stress has also played a role. when a person has been freed up from the stress of dying health improves spontaneously. my whole family is sick with sinus infections and i feel 100 percent fine, they have been sick for weeks and weeks. i actually feel as thouh i may never get sick again. wishful thinking but hey it could happen.

I haven't been sick in 5 years, nor have I caught any bug, my secret is don't worry. If u do feel sick think that u wont, completely take ur mind of it, I dont eat any special foods or do anything special to keep me sick-free. It's just whether or not u have a strong immune system.

I have not missed a day of school for sickness in my life, and I have not had a cold/flu since I can remember. I have, however, thrown up from various causes (working out, partying, food poisoning), but I wouldn't refer to them as being sick. I did have a few ear infections before the time I was 10 though.

I haven't been sick in at least 4 years - I honestly cannot remember the last time I had a cold or the flu or anything similar. I believe it's attributable to a combination of eating a paleo diet and supplementing vitamin D3.
