Con:
Alcohol is bad for you

Pro:
Alcohol has very alcohol-like effects on mood

Given this delicate balance, are you going to drink on the evening of December 31st, 2011? If so, how much? Veteran paleohacker, Stabby, has written a treatise on "Mitigating the deleterious effects of ethanol on health".

I'm not a big drinker, but I do enjoy hacking nutrition and lifestyle. If you are planning on drinking this weekend, would you ever consider hacking your drinking?

[If you are drinking, please drink responsibly, and keep in mind that drinking and driving is sooooooo not paleo]

What about drinking and riding an auroch? Anyway, that's exactly the point, if you were going to get drunk anyway, you might as well do all you can to make the damage as minimal as possible. – Stabby Dec 28 2011 at 21:33

Awesome post by the Stabinator. I love how well referenced it is while being so readable.

I don't drink but hypothetically if I did, I would definitely employ the strategies he mentions.

Ok, that was a bald face lie about not drinking, but my AA sponsor is watching. He's a total fun governor – Aravind Dec 28 2011 at 21:17

The Plan: I have a teeny tiny bottle of contraband hard cider that I will be quaffing with my dog on NYE whilst watching too many movies and snacking on scandalous treats. Not very exciting I agree but there is a method behind the chill madness:

I'm Polar Bear(ing) it up on NYD and if I get drunk then it'll be way too easy to bail on tossing myself into the Atlantic Ocean by way of Coney Island. Right now the estimated water temp is 33° not counting windchill. "Oh no.. my head hurts.. no ocean.. mmm pillow." See? Look how easy that was and I'm currently just drinking tea.

Now, afterwards, there will be warming whiskey toddy action so The Stabby's most excellent Three Way Recommend of "prior/during/next day" will be utilized and employed, just put into play a day after everyone else. With bacon.

Polar Bearing????? Also exactly what kind of scandalous treats? – none Dec 28 2011 at 21:39

OMG, you're nuts! SOOOO cold! I'm a huge wimp about cold. Not much else. But cold -- NO! – Albert Dec 28 2011 at 22:15

I buy big bottles of hard cider... for braising lamb. – Alex Dec 29 2011 at 0:05

It's true. Not an organized thingie, just me up early(ish) and zipping down on the train, shedding the clothes, running in screaming -dive!- running out screaming. The screaming will be part cold and part horror of that water. Scandalous treats will include but not be limited to: shellfish, chocolate, fruit, crispy veg, meat, offal fun things and a very very very fancy ice cream sandwich. Poncey picnic, mini-style. – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Dec 29 2011 at 0:36
On second thought, you aren't nuts. You're awesome! – Albert Dec 29 2011 at 3:23

Ummm... so that means i can get shit-faced on patron and have minimal effects? awesome.

So when's the post coming out about how to avert STD's? I'm gonna need a supplement list for that pronto!

Apparently the lower the calorie:alcohol ratio, the better, because you wanna get drunk, not fat! http://www.getdrunknotfat.com/
I really don't know how reliable this is, but I'm guessing it's a pretty good guide.
As for me, maybe a glass of wine, maybe a few shots of tequila. Patron Silver was my favorite before Paleo and it still is.

Tequila is awesome. Long as I have some water every few shots, no hangover at all the next day. Single malt scotches do the same for me. No issues with wine either. There's probably two pieces to that chart a) calories from alcohol (the more alcohol, the quicker you get drunk) and b) calories from sugars - some of those drinks seem high carb (ie. beers.) – raydawg Dec 28 2011 at 21:18

Weeeelllllll. On Christmas day I drank an entire bottle of bucks fizz and half a bottle of Tia Maria "on the rocks". This triggered a migraine on Christmas night. Bleh. I will however be drinking again on NYE, this time a nice bottle of red (a non expensive one, I feel I need to add, being that it's vulgar to boast about the price of your wine) and will be consulting stabby's excellent blog post for sure!

Fancy! Your red comes in GLASS??? I'm all about the box wine myself. You can take that inner pouch out and put it in your Camelbak and walk around with that hose in your mouth. Attractive? no. But that's not really what I'm aiming for anyway. – none Dec 28 2011 at 21:55

Good point Meredith! Also there's the added bonus of being able to blow up the silver bag the wine comes in when it's empty to use as a pillow. – Carly Dec 28 2011 at 22:00

If I dont get bombed and puke every where on NYE what would I have to feel bad about and make resolutions that I have no intention of keeping on NYD?

Drinking too little. – Stabby Dec 28 2011 at 23:35

The last time I drank at a New Years' event was 2008/2009 when I drank 3/4 of a 750ml bottle of Crown Royal in less than three hours. Suffice it to say I did not have a good night.

Went almost two years without liquor until October 2010 when I walked into a Halloween party with a help-yourself open bar. About 7-8 drinks and a few hours later I was outside trying to give it all back while hunched over in a chair next to the bonfire. Several hours after that, I somehow woke up on the cold wood floor of the host's study without a clue as to how I got there.

And that's the last time I have/will touch liquor. I switched to beer-only from that point on, and was even rather sparing with that for almost another year. I finally quit it all for good in August, just a few months before I started Paleo in November. Now that I'm off of wheat/grains completely, I honestly don't think I'll ever reach for alcohol again. I used to live for that numb, dizzy feeling you get from a good buzz, but now just the thought of it starts to turn my stomach. I'm done.

I've always been a live and let live kinda guy and that hasn't changed, but for me, n=1, I simply don't see any necessary benefit to drinking alcohol. I was a regular partaker for about 10 years and it's definitely something I should have done without.

And I must admit it does surprise me a bit to see so much toleration of it in Paleo discussions, though I do understand it. If I had found Paleo a few years ago instead of now, I'd probably be singing a different song.

No judgment from me for those who want to, but my "hack" is this: Just give it up. You're already doing so much for your health having let go of everything else to be Paleo, so why not go a step further and lose the drink? Personally, I'd rather eat pizza and Krispy Kremes before I'd touch more booze. But if you insist, I would simply suggest that you take full responsibility for the decision to do so and let it be on your terms completely. No party games, peer pressure, smooth talkers, etc. just take it easy and enjoy your drink if you like.

I've made more bad decisions under the influence of alcohol than I care to think about at this point in my life, and some of them have cost me dearly. From my perspective, I have to discourage it.

Cheers, PH.

I am doing a Whole30 in January, so I WILL be having a last hurrah for NYE. I am hoping to avoid a hangover with Stabby's tips! Usually if I stick with one relatively simple drink, I can have 7 or 8 drinks (vodka or tequila with a combo of soda and a little juice works pretty well) and feel okay-ish the next day.

This year I'm not attempting to keep up with someone significantly younger than me on New Year's Eve's Eve. That in itself will go a long way. But really, no matter how hammered I get on New Year's Eve, the traditional pork & sauerkraut dinner on New Year's Day will help to cleanse me of any built up toxins.

I never have more than one glass of wine anyways. I don't understand how people can drink, like, twelve drinks and not just fall over dead.

Try bartending at a karaoke bar on Avenue A, then you'll understand. – Futureboy Dec 28 2011 at 21:17
Or try crashing a frat party. – April S. Dec 28 2011 at 21:27
I've seen it happen, I just don't understand how it happens. Or why anyone would want to feel like that. ;( – Lutfisk Dec 28 2011 at 21:49

Or how these guys can wake up, make it to their 8 a.m. class, and do it all over again that night (and still pass the class.) Ah to be a college student and invincible. – April S. Dec 28 2011 at 22:55

Sadly I inherited an immune-to-alcohol gene from my dad and so have no fun reason to drink.

I will salute the New Year with water kefir, which my grandson and friends assure me smells and tastes mildly alcoholic although all I taste is zingy fruit soda.

@jesuisjuba, even if I COULD get drunk I don't think I'd jump into the ocean. But if I see news highlights I'll think of you with pride.

Trust me, the immune-to-alcohol gene is a hell of a lot preferable to the impossible-to-drink-in-moderation gene I seem to have gotten from my biological mother, who was from a family of hardcore alcoholics. – Alex Dec 29 2011 at 0:03
@Alex, I think there is significant variation among humans as far as reacting to alcohol. I married someone who had a weakness for it but never became an alcoholic; our son had to stop drinking because he became belligerent under the influence. So far, though, the grandkid seems normal although he's only had a few sips so far because he's still under age. At least he isn't drawn to it like his dad and grandpa. – Nance Dec 29 2011 at 0:25

I am sure I will have several glasses of red wine during the evening. There will be NO repeat performance of about 3 years ago when at the end of the evening three of us polished off an entire bottle of creamy tequila liqueur in three tumblers and woke up the following morning feeling like slugs.

With age comes wisdom and I can now sense when it is time to quit before I inflict pain on myself.

I try to limit my alcohol consumption to organic red wine with my meals and to drink water while going out.

But this might be helpful : "This post is about how to use biohacking to enjoy alcohol without many side effects (you know, things like cancer, aging, and hangovers). And to celebrate the holidays, here’s an infographic that distills (ahem) all I know about alcohol, metabolism, and toxins into practical advice you can use. Since I hardly ever drink (1 glass of red wine per week, if any) and I only have this one year to enjoy living in Belgium, I will stuff my face with Old Amsterdam cheese and my pancetta and mint wrapped prawns and will go see the fireworks by the river with a bottle of Malheur Champagnoise Dark Brut beer. I know, the worst possible, but hey, you only live once. :)

Definitely planning on imbibing a little on NYE. Found the Skinny Girl white cranberry martini at Christmas and love it!! Not Paleo - but yummy all the same. I don't do it often, so when I do I want to enjoy what I am going to drink!! =)

Rather depends on what I'm doing. If I'm driving anywhere it'll be a glass of red wine (two at most, spread over several hours), if I'm not it'll be wine or spirits.

Never been a huge drinker and can happily go weeks without alcohol. On the other hand I had 2 double Jack Daniels the other night (probably closer to triples actually) with no effect whatever. Vodka and single-malt Scotch have a similar non-effect. The only proviso I put on things is that I don't swap between them.

For the record, Snow Leopard vodka is very nice neat :)

i limit my wine consumption to 5 ounces of home brew. i know exactly what is in it. it lowers my blood pressure and mine taste better than i can import. i wont sell it. and i only share with my father. my dad claims its the best he can get his hands on also. so i will be having that glass of wine at home as usual. i would recommend eveybody brew there own also. it can be very fun and rewarding. its not beyond the capibilities of anybody.
