Probably a weird question, but is there any sort of evolutionary basis for eating warm/hot meals?

Sometimes when I'm eating, I feel like I enjoy my food less because I'm racing against the clock, to eat it while it's still piping hot. It gets pretty bad to the point where I sometimes microwave my meal every ten minutes to keep it very hot. Okay, perhaps a slight exaggeration, but my mind sort of does go, "hey...it's cold now." I can't quite call this orthorexia.

Has anyone experienced this kind of weird preference?

i just can say that cooked food has a higher caloric value that raw food, translated that means it is more digestible albeit somewhat less nutritious. that might have had some evolutionary advantages scenarios during hard times when food was scarce. Cooking would kill pathogens thus giving survivors an advantage over those that succumbed to virus, bacteria, or parasites. Cooked meat can be chewed quickly compared to raw although the time required to gather wood and cook the meat would negate the advantage. some foods such as chestnuts(the bread tree) are shelled most easily by fire. lastly, fire side meals were probably a joyous occasion for early man offering some protection against other creatures that feed on humans but fear the fire and smoke. the smell of roasting meat could have helped early man locate other humans for several miles away. bringing new genetic material into the tribe.

I definitely think it's just a matter of preference. I probably would prefer hot food...if I could remember what eating hot food is like. I tend to make sure I serve my hubby and kids first at mealtimes, which usually leads to me eating last...my food is usually lukewarm at best. :-)

I've often wondered the same thing. I don't enjoy food so hot that it burns me, but I definitely prefer a hot meal over a cold one. I enjoy some foods that I see as meant to be cold- like deviled eggs, smoked salmon and cream cheese. While I generally enjoy those foods, I find I crave hot food more. I definitely don't enjoy cold leftovers of say, grilled chicken or meatloaf. I always want my leftovers microwaved.

I feel the exact same way! Cold leftovers are the worst. Except pizza... I didn't mind cold pizza for breakfast. But I obviously don't have to worry about that anymore. – April S. Dec 30 2011 at 22:02
