My husband came home yesterday and told me that the reason I'm so crabby (I don't think I'm crabby... maybe it's just him!) sometimes on this diet is because the fat in the bacon I eat makes me crabby. It reacts with some chemical in my body and causes mood swings. He wasn't exactly precise when he told me this information. I think it sounds like hog wash, but wanted to know if anyone else had heard anything like that. Hog wash... hahahaha!

Tell him that if he thinks the bacon makes you crabby then you will start eating it covered in dark chocolate to see if it helps. Hee hee.

I only get crabby when I run out of bacon and so far I haven't figured out how to get a 24 hour bacon IV drip.

I ran a search on PubMed. There's one study out there that claims high fat in the morning can have an adverse effect on energy levels and mood, but they don't say whether they corrected for carb withdrawal symptoms when they tested this. They also say that this effect doesn't happen later in the day.

There are some other studies that suggest omega-3s might help mood, esp in diabetics, and bacon doesn't have omega-3s unless you feed the pigs fish oil.

(Also other stuff out there that may or may not contradict and/or support the above; I'm a beginner at reading research abstracts!)

So maybe hubby heard a garbled form of some of these studies (or similar), and drew some incorrect conclusions? Or the conclusions were already incorrect when they reached his ear?

Or he just wants you off bacon. Who knows?

I've discovered I don't do so great with extra fat in the morning meal. Not bacon, of course! But sometimes I have leftover dinner for breakfast, and sometimes it's not the best reaction. I do suspect the fat, because I'm fine when I have, say, just a hunk of meat (not much fat). – November Dec 31 2011 at 23:14

Huh. I know that when my husband (rarely) eats crappy food with refined flours and crappy oils, he gets crabby and mood swingy (though he goes back and forth on whether he agrees with me on this). There should be some word for this, SAD-PMS? PSADS (post-SAD-syndrome)? So anyway, maybe he's crabby and is just projecting :)

Though I do know that eating nitrate-y cured bacon a lot can make my stomach wonky, which totally makes me crabby.

Well, saturated fats can affect your hormones, but I haven't heard of people getting crabby after eating bacon. Moreso the other way around. Baconrage at being denied bacon.

Crazy talk! I could see getting crabby about running out of bacon, but not from eating it.

n=1 of course, but one of my girlfriends has a little boy with autism, and she has told me that he is most calm and well-behaved after he eats bacon.

If anything fat is good for you and should have the opposite effect. For years I ate a "Fat Free diet" and I was moody and depressed majority of the time. After switching to Paleo/Primal this month, I feel energized, enthusiastic, and happy...180 change.

Idk I've been worried bacon causes bad "side effects" but honestly.... I just ate about three packs of kirkland signature and I feel really good.... like full actually. and not stressed. Hopefully it won't prove to be a negative thing later!

I have never heard of this, and my personal N=1 is that bacon helps with mood, unless I eat a whole plate of it.

Actually, according to this article, bacon is possibly better for you than other pork products. Something to do with traditional curing techniques. Uncured pork is shown to cause platelet aggregation in the blood. Check out the study.

well i dont have any pictures cuz im in english right now im doing a paper on it cuz im in LOVE with bacon so the turkey covered in bacon looks delicous! yum!
