How toxic is chamomile tea on the kidneys and liver due mainly to the coumarin it contains? How much tea would need to be consumed to be a problem. And is chamomile tea a potential problem for diabetics? Does anyone have any detailed knowledge of this and does anyone have any positive/negative experiences with chamomile tea with regards to diabetes?

Chamomile tea is said to be an anxiolytic which is why I am considering drinking it as I find it difficult to sleep these past months which is quite important to address in Palaeo or any other lifestyle for that matter. It also has many other potential beneficial effects.

I find lavender tea more effective than chamomile as an anxiolytic, so if you're worried about chamomile, you could try lavender. – Sara S. Jan 3 2012 at 0:10
Are you taking Magnesium. I get a great night's sleep now that I take 300-400 mg Mag Citrate an hour before bed. – Dragonfly Jan 3 2012 at 2:04
Thanks, I will look into the magnesium, I used to take it but not since awhile. And I'll try the lavender tea as well, reminds me of those lavender pillows. – Orang Asli Jan 3 2012 at 2:28

I don't know the answer to this. Don't you have something better to worry about than the toxicity of chamomile tea?

and this page mentions the liver: herbs2000.com/herbs/herbs_chamomile.htm – eric Jan 2 2012 at 23:14
Thanks for the links. In that last one, they identified that German chamomile possesses... 'the chemical compounds azulene and guaiazulene' and as 'being able to initiate the growth of new tissues in experimental rats which had a portion of their livers surgically removed'. Interesting, but no mention of coumarin though. But overall chamomile sounds generally positive for diabetes. – Orang Asli Jan 2 2012 at 23:57
I found two links: 1) Coumarin in cinnamon and other foods bfr.bund.de/cm/349/… 2) Protective Effects of Dietary Chamomile Tea on Diabetic Complications: pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/jf8014365 – Orang Asli Jan 3 2012 at 2:52
