Dancing...horizontally...naked, in bed with my hubby. Hiking would be my very distant second choice. |

Me? Just a few examples are: cooking with music and singing horribly along, breaking into bad dance moves between lifting sets, skipping to coffee, chasing after the dog, chatting up farmers at the greenmarkets, taking the train to a new stop and wandering around. Getting a Zipcar for the day for a random adventure to hell knows where. Organizing books by colour instead of alpha or by author. Attempting to make the bed military style to see if, really, you can bounce a quarter off of it. Why have a certain activity? Life should be play! |

It's funny to me that the things I do to be active (walk, hike, bike, cross-country ski, and kayak) aren't the things that I think of as play. I enjoy them, but they aren't playful things in my mind. For me, playing is lifting myself up on rings or a bar, doing somersaults, or climbing up things (be they abbey ruins or a small butte). Oh, and also, getting down on all fours and playing with my dog. I don't play nearly enough. |

I'm with Sara S. I really enjoy walking, reading, knitting, watching sports, etc., but none of that is play. My play consists of living with 3 toy dogs and 2 lively cats--more than enough hilarity on a typical day. I'm also fortunate to have amusing, light-hearted friends who bear with the challenges of life but still greet the sun with a smile. |

i like the swings at the park and playing tag. last night i lost an awesome tickle fight; my sides are totally bruised and my voice is octaves lower from all the screaming. |

Bboying (also known to media as breakdancing.) Good combination of balance, strength, a smidgen of glycogen depletion, and feeling "dangerous" every once in a while. Or random monkey outdoor activities. |

Me? Well, I make theatre, so I play every day. That's pretty great. Some of my work plays (pun intended) with what is "ritual" and what is "play". Besides, who doesn't love art in he streets, or out in big fields? Cooking is fun. Man sizzle meat on fire. Sound like music. Smell good. Be tasty. ... But playing with my mate is pretty great too. That's my favorite. PS: If anyone wants a great book on play as an evolutionary/anthropological phenomenon, Homo Ludens is dense and a bit outdated but very good. Free Play would also be one that the paleo people might enjoy. |

I always struggle with the play thing -- because I know the idea is that I just delight in some physical sport-like activity. Well, I'm a middle-aged woman, and I do exercise (and am at my perfect weight and look great), and enjoy the occasional gentle hike or bike ride or something like canoeing, and walk my dog a lot and enjoy that .... but play and pleasure for me would be something like exploring a great antique store or book store or new neighborhood, or getting together with a friend, or making jewelry, or something else that doesn't fit the chest-thumping paleo ideal at all. But basically, nothing involving running around or throwing things or whatever is my idea of a good time at all. Hated it when I was a kid, hate it now. |
