I'm not sure this is a "paleo" question, but many of you are pretty health-savvy, so if you have any thoughts, help me out. For several days now, I've had this uncomfortable pressure in my throat. It feels EXACTLY like it does when you get a capsule or tablet of something stuck in your throat (but that goes away in a couple of minutes). It's not really constant. I feel it for a minute or two, and then I won't for a half hour or so.
I've definitely considered that it is my thyroid, as it's right where the thyroid sits. But I can't imagine why so suddenly it would get inflamed. As far as I know, I've never had issues with my thyroid. I am a 22 y/o female and I eat well and crossfit.
This is gross, but is it possible that I could actually have something stuck in my throat for that long? I think it started around four days ago.
Thanks for ANY thoughts.
This is one I'd call the docs on. Among many other possibilities, you need to make sure you don't have some sort of infection draining from your ears or mouth. Once you rule out the things diet can't fix, then have fun speculating!
Do you have problems swallowing with it? Or is it just the uncomfortable feeling of having something in your throat? Are you prone to anxiety? There is a disorder having to do with anxiety and dysphagia. It could also be a build up of phlegm or mucosal secretion of some sort - have you been sick lately or suffer from allergies?
There is also a simple answer - GERD - exactly my symptoms - definitely food getting stuck ( Vit B was a give away!) no reflux symptoms - but it all went away after taking a Proton pump inhibitor ( like Losec )
Does it happen after you eat certain foods? If so, you may also need to look into allergy testing, specifically for eosinophilic esophagitis, a serious condition where food really does get stuck in your throat. It's dangerous because eosiniphils (cells from your stomach/gut) make their way up into the esophagus and cause damage (scar tissue further exacerbating the issue of food getting stuck) if left untreated long term. It's fairly common - think of anyone you may have known who tends to choke on certain foods. Unfortunately it's only now becoming more recognized even in the allergy community and most people just live with it. Do get medical attention, and if you can rule this out, that would surely be great news and hopefully lead you toward the right solution.
If it bothers you for more than a day or two I'd definitely go to the doctor. There are a lot of these "urgent care" medical places around where you can walk in and someone will see you pretty much immediately for $50-100 (possibly covered by insurance) and determine if it's really serious or not.
My wife and son sometimes get something where food gets stuck in their upper esophagus, usually something small like a seed or piece of salad. I think it has to do with the shape of their throat. It usually goes away after a few drinks of something, but even after it's gone can feel weird for a while. I once I got something stuck under the base of my tongue for a few hours, same kind of thing.
There are probably enough other bizarre/scary possibilities that if it doesn't go away, I'd get it checked out. I have heard of things like a blocked saliva gland. There are also various glands and lymph nodes in your throat that can get swollen or tumorous.
I agree with Nance, take a trip to the Docs.
That being said; have you made any food or supplement changes? Particularly Iodine &/or Iodine containing foods?
I have experienced the 'pressure in throat' feeling & similar to smiling_jack it was iodine related.
It happened to me when i started taking a Potassium Iodide supplement, even in small microgram doses. (note. potassium iodide is often found in multi-vits). It usually took 2 or 3 days to come-on after starting the iodine (in Potassium Iodide form). If i stopped it would go away, usually with 24 to 48 hrs.
I now take Iosol, which does not contain Potassium Iodide (contains Iodine & Ammonium Iodide). I started with 1 drop of Iosol without any issues. Interesting, because 1 drop of Iosol was a much larger dose than the potassium iodide dose that would cause me issues.
1 drop Iosol=1.83mg (1,830 micrograms) Iodine.
A friend of mine had a feeling like something was stuck in his throat, and learned to ignore it for a couple of years. Turned out it was a small bone got lodged there. Can't believe he lived with it that long!
Hey All, Thank you for your wonderful help and ideas. I got a little freaked out, and almost made a doctor appointment. But a couple days after I posted this, it simply went away. I'm not sure why, how, etc. or what had caused it. I have some suspicion that it IS an anxiety-related problem, because I am definitely going through a stressful time. Interesting. Definitely worth some research for anyone curious about stress-related disorders.
