I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis 2 years ago and rheumatoid factor was classified to below normal levels. With not symptoms in the beginning i continued my merry way with my active life and my non paleo eating habits. Once starting crossfit and training 6 days a week i found it hard to recover and more and more my joints and muscles began to hurt. I have not taken medication. So i then turned to paleo and and zone. Did a 3o day challange and gained results immediately. The only thing is that i struggling to reach my appropriate amount of consumption of protein as there is a lack of variety. I tend to over consume on good fats being coconut oil and nuts and fruit. I have cut the fruit down to 2 pieces per day increase veggies were i can for snacks. I have considered starting up to eat red meat again to increase my protein but am afraid of it getting any gut irritant symptoms as its quite sensitive. That is being lactose intolerance and gluten intolerance. With family history of poor gut health and rheumatoid arthritis i need to be a million time more cautious about what i consume. I lead a very active lifestyle being involved in corssfit, parkour and yoga tiredness and poor blood sugar balance are constant barrier for me. Any advice as how to increase the rheumatoid factor? Increase muscle recovery? Transitioning from vegetarian to carnivore? And any other advice will be much appreciated. =)

Carnivores only eat meat. Most of us here can't be called carnivores as we eat vegetables too. :) You already eat fish, you're half way there. It's very important to eliminate all grains and legumes, as well as industrial seed oils (corn, canola, safflower, soy, etc.) Since you've got joint issues, eliminating nightshades is probably a good idea as well. It sounds like you've already eliminated wheat and dairy, but make sure you're not exposed to hidden sources of wheat. Avoid all packaged foods as they're like sources of these things. Since you're very active, make sure you get a lot of calories, and plenty from carbs too. Foods like avocados, sweet potatoes, and coconut oil (which you already take) come to mind. Especially the coconut oil as it can heal leaky gut. Before diving in to meat directly, start with some bones from grassfed bison or beef, and make a bone broth. If you've got a slow cooker, that's the easiest way to go, if not just simmer a pot on the stove, mostly covered, but with a little bit of an opening so it doesn't explode, and keep adding water as needed for at least 6 hours. If you're not quite ready for bone broth, maybe find some unflavored gelatin (i.e. Knox) and either add it to something like a soup, or a drink. The gelatin in the broth or the commercial stuff will help your gut heal also. Eat some kale if you don't already, but cook it so its nutrients are available. After that, find some pastured eggs, ones that haven't been fed soy, and start there. Then, maybe add some pastured chicken, and grassfed beef or better yet bison. Eat it in small amounts at first and see if you can tolerate it. If you have problems digesting meat, i.e. it sits in your stomach like a brick, you've probably got issues with stomach acid. Once your gut starts to heal, getting enough minerals such as magnesium, potassium, zinc, etc. will allow for enough stomach acid, but until then, you might want to take a few betaine HCL caps before meals containing meat. In terms of muscle recovery, the magnesium can help, so can the so called "PowerDrive Formulation", for which there's a homemade version. Carnitine, BCAA can help too. The most important thing is getting enough rest - rest a day or two between workouts. |

I have autoimmune diseases, cutting out vegetable and whole grains helped me tremendously. Are you eating nuts, you said? with RA? really? Do you not feel instant joint pain as soon as you eat nuts? I don't know if my condition is more serious than yours or what, but I literally feel the pain right after consuming nuts. nuts, veg, grains, legumes are not your friend, if you really suffer an autoimmune disease. |

Are you taking vitamin D? Do you get enough vitamin A and K from your diet? |

Have you read about the GAPS diet for improving/fixing gut health? It's a slow approach way to healing a leaky gut that fits very well with a Paleo/Primal philosophy. You start out with bone broth and fermented fruits/veggies, plus supplementation, and then move on to meats, veggies, fruit. Once you feel confident about your gut health you could then move on slowly to other Paleo/Primal foods. It might fit your needs. |
