I started eating paleo in the last three weeks. This past week, I have had a very slightly elevated temperature on a few separate occasions. It doesn't seem to be tied to when I eat and I have no other symptoms. It has not been consistent- for example, during the day on Thursday I felt warm all day and my eyes felt warm (like when you have a fever, but this was very mild). Then it went away, then came back around mid-day Saturday and was gone again today. The only big change I've made recently is in my diet so I wanted to check in and see if anyone else has experienced this. Thanks for any advice you can give!
You may be adjusting to a new higher body temperature due to unleashing your metabolism. 98.6F is not a standard that all humans target; it's more of an average. People I know who have sluggish metabolisms have normal temps closer to 96.9F. Take your temperature; if it's not higher than 99.5 or so, I'd say it's no big deal. Over 100 would almost certainly be infection or inflammation related, though, and I'd see the doc.
Although there is no way anyone (myself included) can answer this question without your actual temperature readings for at least a week before and after you started eating Paleo, I have an impression of what is causing the increase in body temps you describe. If you have been measuring your body temps for several weeks, only noticed a significant increase after you changed your diet, and nothing else in your life changed significantly in the same time period, then common sense suggests that your diet is increasing/improving your metabolism by enhancing leptin and thyroid function, which makes sense since a Paleo diet is well known to do this (see Dr. Kruse's articles on this subject).
Also if you have made any other changes in your lifestyle in addition to diet around the same time, such as increasing exercise frequency or intensity, this could also explain the increase in body temps. You really do need to record your temps multiple times every day for several weeks (for example, according to Dr. Rind's protocol described here: http://www.drrind.com/therapies/metabolic-temperature-graph#directions) to gain any valuable information from your readings.
Your overall state of being is probably more important than the body temp readings though, unless you have already been diagnosed with one or more illnesses. If you feel healthy and have enough energy and ability to do everything you want to do, then small changes in your body temp readings are not worth thinking about.
I remember the first time I had a steak in about 2 years, it was so tasty I ended up cooking myself another huge steak then went to bed. About 2 hours later I woke up in a sweat which I thought was pretty weird. I think it might have been that my body wasn't used to digesting that much protein that it really revved up my metabolism to try and burn it off.
So have I a few days in but I am sure I have a germ and I'm cross because I hardly ever catch them so how come just when I am eating the best I ever have that I have? My immune system should be even better than usual not worse.
