I'm on vacation and don't have the funds are tools to make homemade Paleo salsa. Are there any brands I can buy at the store that would be as close to Paleo as possible? I have a wal-mart, publix, and ward's (organic family-owned) nearby.

You'll still have to read the labels as some have juice - if you're avoiding, some have evaporated cane juice - if it bugs you, but Frontera is pretty solid and it's in a jar. Also check in the cold section as there could be some fresh ones to explore. – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Jan 5 2012 at 16:52
Ditto on the fresh ones in the refrigerated section. Also check deli area, especially at the organic, locally-owned place. – Karen P. Jan 5 2012 at 17:46

Herdez makes fantastic salsa verde and regular salsa. Very clean ingredients list with no preservatives. These are a staple for me.

Isn't Herdez canned? – Julie Jan 5 2012 at 17:58
I haven't seen it in a can. I've bought it both at Walmart and Target, and both stores carried it in jars. – Kate Jan 5 2012 at 18:04

I'll presume you don't mean the ones I make for myself each summer and can. ;^)

Wegmans has a line of salsas that I think are clean, and I also like some of the items from "green mountain gringo".

Where are you that you shop at Weggies? :) I love Wegmans, have a big trip planned for Sunday when I do my monthly shopping - they always have all my paleo needs there - best grocery store ever! – fabbecky Jan 5 2012 at 17:21
If you click on my name or my icon, then my profile will be revealed... if you want to save that step, I'm in Manlius, NY, USA. – Adam Crafter Jan 5 2012 at 18:35

I think your best options would be the fresh salsas or pico blends in the produce section. If you go for the pico it is just hot peppers, tomatoes, and onions. You can add a little vinegar, lime juice, and salt to salsa-fy it a bit more. Or just a dash of salt and eat straight - my favorite option!

Yes to this, but read the label to check for sugar in the fresh stuff. – Adam Crafter Jan 5 2012 at 18:36
Of course :) I assumed the ingredient reading was a given :) – fabbecky Jan 5 2012 at 20:23

Publix has their "Greenwise" line of organic salsas that are pretty good from what I remember... and they're affordable on a budget ;-)

Brad's Organic Salsa line is very tasty, not sure if it is available nationwide, but it is jarred and they have some great flavors. I do prefer fresh salsa, but great tomatoes aren't always available, and they are totally the secret to amazing pico de gallo!! Their website is: http://www.bradsorganic.com/ which might help you find if they distribute near you. There are a ton of other organics listed on their website which I have never seen but will definitely seek out.

Trader Joes has a couple that are fine and I use them once in a while. They have a roasted garlic and a salsa verde. Read up on the labels there!

I will buy a jar of 505 Chile occasionally, http://www.505chile.com/products.html

Most of their products are gluten free with rice flour added for thickening, though they do make one (Roasted and Diced Green Chile, second to the bottom on the page above) that is just green chile, garlic and lime.

If I don't feel like making my own, I consider these a decent option, though they aren't a staple of my diet by any means.
