My 5 yr old daughter LOVES fish oil. I can bribe her with fish oil capsules, and I have caught her numerous times with the bottle and a guilty look on her face. She will chew them so the oil squirts out, and then chew the capsule casing. Gross, huh? She is fed healthy food (notice my wording--she is a crummy eater), and doesn't get much sugar or junk food at all. We eat local beef and pork, both grass fed, local chicken, and salmon, crab, and scallops. Also, she has had this rash, which I think might be keratosis polaris, since she was an infant. Bumpy skin on her arms and cheeks. I'm guessing her diet is missing something, which is why she is so into fish oil. Can anyone help me by giving me some ideas about what she might be lacking, as well as some kid-friendly sources of same? Thanks.

No answer for you but my nieces are, well one more so than the other, very picky eaters. But they both love to eat the fish skin whenever we have salmon. The oldest who is the most particular likes it best. Not everyone enjoys the greasy, oily skin so the girls can usually eat their fill of it. – Touch the Clouds Jan 7 2012 at 6:05
Keratosis can be related to retinol deficiency. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Jan 7 2012 at 6:07
Hmm... I wasn't familiar with keratosis but at least one of my nieces has had similar looking bumps on her skin as well. – Touch the Clouds Jan 7 2012 at 6:22

thanks, Melissa. I just googled it...I keep shying away from liver, but I think I should buck up and learn to love it. I can't even think about touching it to prep it! We get amazing eggs from our chickens, but like I said, she is a terrible eater. – legup Jan 7 2012 at 6:29

I'm right there with your daughter, I grew up thinking cod liver oil capsules were candy. I still chew them today. I've always loved the sweet taste of the gel cap, and liked the fish oil too.

I always thought my mom liked them too, but now that I'm grown she let that cat out of the bag that she is pretty grossed out by the flavor and marveled at how much I liked them. She had heard it was healthy, and I think worried about us getting primo nutrition on an otherwise meat free diet (except for the occasional liver or chicken organ meats which also grossed her out, but I loved it).

My 2 year old son has also shown to be quite the fan, and will jump up and down shrieking with glee when he sees me getting the bottle out. I'm a little worried about when he's your daughter's age and has figured out how to open them, I might have to hide the bottle.

Yup, the gel caps are sweet. My children loved them, too. – Ambimorph Jan 7 2012 at 14:49
Also, the texture is chewy in a satisfying way. – Ambimorph Jan 7 2012 at 14:49

Sunlight and Vit D for the keratosis polaris.

I think she likes chewing them because they are chewy, not bc she is craving something.

Well, I never thought of that (..."because they are chewy"). Can't believe she can get past the fishy just for the chewy. You are probably right about the sunlight too. We live in the PNW and don't get lots of sun in the winter. Can you just expose your face, or do you have to do your whole body in order to get the benefits? Do you know? She goes to a school that is mostly outdoors, so she is exposed to the elements everyday, but only her face gets sun. thx much! – legup Jan 7 2012 at 5:21
Unfortunately I have had it literally forever, it never went away 100%. What makes it flair are temperature drops and fabrics/allergies. I notice if my eyes are itching/watering, the bumps are worse. Im in FL, so when summer comes, the more I run around without a shirt and get sun and salt water, the more it goes away. – Bill1102inf Jan 7 2012 at 14:03
Haha, I just commented above about the chewiness. I agree. And I don't think there is that much of a fish taste, especially if you aren't think about it as such. Maybe the grossness is just a conditioned reaction to thinking about what it is. – Ambimorph Jan 7 2012 at 14:51
