My 5 yr old daughter LOVES fish oil. I can bribe her with fish oil capsules, and I have caught her numerous times with the bottle and a guilty look on her face. She will chew them so the oil squirts out, and then chew the capsule casing. Gross, huh? She is fed healthy food (notice my wording--she is a crummy eater), and doesn't get much sugar or junk food at all. We eat local beef and pork, both grass fed, local chicken, and salmon, crab, and scallops. Also, she has had this rash, which I think might be keratosis polaris, since she was an infant. Bumpy skin on her arms and cheeks. I'm guessing her diet is missing something, which is why she is so into fish oil. Can anyone help me by giving me some ideas about what she might be lacking, as well as some kid-friendly sources of same? Thanks.

I'm right there with your daughter, I grew up thinking cod liver oil capsules were candy. I still chew them today. I've always loved the sweet taste of the gel cap, and liked the fish oil too. I always thought my mom liked them too, but now that I'm grown she let that cat out of the bag that she is pretty grossed out by the flavor and marveled at how much I liked them. She had heard it was healthy, and I think worried about us getting primo nutrition on an otherwise meat free diet (except for the occasional liver or chicken organ meats which also grossed her out, but I loved it). My 2 year old son has also shown to be quite the fan, and will jump up and down shrieking with glee when he sees me getting the bottle out. I'm a little worried about when he's your daughter's age and has figured out how to open them, I might have to hide the bottle. |

Sunlight and Vit D for the keratosis polaris. I think she likes chewing them because they are chewy, not bc she is craving something. |
