I have chronic constipation and I tend to go only 1x per week (my thyroid function tested fine). I have tried the following herbal supplement with good results but I'm hesitant to depend on it all the time. What are your thoughts on the ingredients?

BLESSED HERBS Digestive Stimulator: Cape Aloe Leaf, Aloe Vera Leaf, Cascara sagrade bark, Chinese rhubarb root, barberry root, dandelion root, fringe tree root bark, amla fruit, belleric myrobalan fruit, chebullic myrobalan fruit, meadowsweet aerial parts, english plantain aerial parts, ginger root, fennel seed, peppermint leaf, fenugreek seed, licorice root.

Amount per capsule is 450mg total combined ingredients but you are to take as many capsules as you need to get regular. I've taken about 6 per day for a few days in a row. The effects are gentle and natural.

Any input is appreciated!

I got more regular when I added fat to my diet- do you eat much? – henny Jan 8 2012 at 20:18
I mainly eat meat (all types including fatty cuts), veggies, eggs, bacon and coconut oil. I'm not restricting calories or anything so I do eat big portions when I'm hungry. – PaleoGal Jan 8 2012 at 20:47
Did you have constipation issues before starting paleo too? I'd suggest: plenty of water and salt, magnesium citrate, some fermented foods. – Phoenix Jan 9 2012 at 1:19
Skip the supplement, start an elimination diet to figure out what is problematic. – Matt Jan 9 2012 at 1:24
IF regularity is your issue, take 1/4 epsom salt before going to sleep. That should make you go. If lack of moisture is yoru issue, you might want to put some starch back into your diet. – Namby Pamby Jan 9 2012 at 1:44

How about a cup of coffee

I drink a cup every day – PaleoGal Jan 8 2012 at 21:06
coffee is very dehydrating. – Lindsay Jan 8 2012 at 23:38
Coffee is not dehydrating, that's a myth. – Matt Jan 9 2012 at 1:22
This is entirely too much information... but just the sound and smell of brewing coffee makes me go every morning no matter what. – bc4work Jan 9 2012 at 2:09

If you want to poo, you have to eat.

Add 50-150 grams of fiber to your diet daily and you will poo like mad.

First and foremost in constipation is the lack of water consumption. If that doesn't work:

Oleation and Purgation:

A three day oleation with ghee (clarified butter) followed by a castor oil purgation will provide an eliminative support as well as cumulatively reinstate a more unctuous environment in the colon.

  1. While eating lightly for days, start each day with progressively increasing amounts of liquid ghee (2-4-6 teaspoons), taken orally.

  2. On the eve of the third day, take a warm bath before retiring and drink 6 teaspoons of castor oil as a purgative.

  3. If there is any sign of weakness or fatigue then avoid the procedure above and simply take 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of castor oil every night for one month. This should not produce a laxative effect. If it does, then take less castor oil, as a continuous laxative effect can be depleting.

I'd +1 for water consumption, but the rest looks iffy. – Matt Jan 9 2012 at 1:23
ghee is just clarified butter, it saturates the tissues of the digestive system. It's an ayurvedic practice, been used for thousands of years. Way less damaging than a water colonic or laxatives, which destroy bacterial colonies in the colon. One can always skip the castor oil and just do the ghee for 3 days. It will lubricate everything. Constipation often occurs -esp. this time of year, due to a drying out of the system. – Lindsay Jan 9 2012 at 16:09

I have to be honest with you and let you know that I have been in the exact same position, but I would go maybe once every TWO weeks. One time I didnt go for over 20 days (obviously I was taken to a Dr at that point because I was in pain and needed something to relieve me). BUT that was all PRE paleo. Once I went Paleo I started eating more fat and drinking more water and it all regulated out to the point that I go at LEAST once a day. It has been amazing! So my questions to you are: how much are you eating?? and How much water do you drink? Try to up the amount of water you consume in a day and eat just a little more fat and see what happens! And I have tried every herb there is to try, nothing seemed to help much because the ones that did help made my stomach hurt so badly that it just wasn't worth it to me. Anyway, good luck!
