My blood pressure generally runs around 100 over 70 and sometimes lower. My last 25 Hydroxy vitamin D test was on Sept 1 and it was 53.5. I assumed the number was fairly accurate although there is lots of variation between labs. I wanted to up this number especially with fall/winter arrival so I started taked 4,800 D3 plus the 400 in my multi and whatever is in my food such as mushrooms, egg yolk, shrimp. On days I go to indoor tanning, I drop back to 2,400. Previously I used a dry vitamin d capsule but read that oil based are better absorbed so I switched to oil based and that's what I've been taking. I will recheck levels next month but am wondering if any of you who supplement have noticed a lowering of your bp? Since mine is already fairly low -- when it drops further I feel like total crap. Today it was mid-40s and I went to tanning parlor -- 6 minutes in a medium intensity stand-up bed that someone had just used so it was extremely warm in there and I was sweating afterward. I then went out into the cold but didn't need gloves anymore as I was so overheated from the tanning. I really felt like utter crap -- was away from home but felt like my bp was in the toilet. So do any of you who supplement with d get a bp drop?Normally I would suspect the temp change -- going from cold to sweating to cold might affect bp somehow but I've been feeling increasingly tired since upping the vitamin d and my bp has run a bit low as well. PS: I'm not salt phobic and regularly use Celtic seasalt.
Vitamin D directly effects the renin angiotensin aldosterone system. Many clinical studies have long suggested an association of inadequate sunlight exposure or low serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 levels with high blood pressure and/or high plasma renin activity. D3 functions as a potent negative endocrine regulator of the renin gene expression. This down regualtion provides some insights into the mechanism and is why I recommend a minimum level of 60 ng plasma level by Sept 15th in the Northern hemisphere in my blog on Vitamin D.
The concept of vitamin D regulation of blood pressure through the Renin Angiotensin Aldosterone system should open a new ideas to clinicians/researchers in trying to explain the physiological functions of the vitamin D3 in the endocrine system. For nephrologists it provides a basis for exploring the potential use of vitamin D3 in prevention of hypertension.
The low light conditions also do some amazing things to the thyroid pineal axis to modulate this axis and further cause massive changes in the brain orbitofrontal axis too to affect behavior (docile, depression) and lower metabolism while the blood pressure caves.
Vitamin D binding proteins become the bank account to prevent most of these side effects if that system is working well. In most it is not.
