If you had a choice between eating some nuts, and eating some fruit, which would you choose? Also, which do you think is a better snack, if you only had those two choices?
Just wondering what people's perspectives on this are.
In general, I'm trying to learn NOT to snack. I think, for me, it messes with my body's hunger signaling system. If I nibble, my body never figures out what it feels like to be hungry, and stops signaling me at all. I choose nuts over fruit, if those are my only two choices -- but if my choices are more broad, I prefer dehydrated, spiced, roasted meat or jerky to either nuts or fruit.
I have two hands so I can hold almonds in one and a banana in the other. If I had a third it would be holding dark chocolate.
I never eat nuts. They have way too much oxalate and a poor Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio--two problems that are very important in my diet. I believe fruit is a healthier choice than nuts for most people, but still not a great snack option by itself because many fruits can cause blood sugar spikes and dips -- an issue for many people, including me. I will only eat fruit if it is accompanied by some good protein and fat--preferably with meat as part of my regular meal, but yogurt or a slice of cheese will do, especially if snacking. I also try to eat non-starchy fruits like berries, not bananas, when I eat fruit as a snack. Most of the time, however, I find a slice of meat is the best snack, accompanied by some re-tooling of my meal plan to make snacking unnecessary.
I'm also nuts over fruit, but raw macadamias only. And thinking that each handful is $$$ helps me remember that snacking is in general a bad habit and I just need to eat more real actual food with my actual meals.
I do nuts now since I am lower carb and it is winter, but I also swear that macadamia nuts help me lose weight, everyday I have 1-2 ounces of them I lose weight, and they keep me really full. I also tend to eat fruit more when it is in season, so in the summer I eat much more fruit, whatever it is ripe.
Nuts over fruit, but these days, I find reaching for another coffee with some ghee and/or coconut oil works better to quash cravings. When I crave something salty, I tend to go for Macadamia, so beyond that, I see if I have something that would work. @Work that would mean jerky, at home, maybe I'll fry up a slice or two of bacon.
