If you had a choice between eating some nuts, and eating some fruit, which would you choose? Also, which do you think is a better snack, if you only had those two choices?

Just wondering what people's perspectives on this are.

Thanks. :)

Nuts! I just spilled coffee all over my desk.

But to answer your question: Nuts!

In general, I'm trying to learn NOT to snack. I think, for me, it messes with my body's hunger signaling system. If I nibble, my body never figures out what it feels like to be hungry, and stops signaling me at all. I choose nuts over fruit, if those are my only two choices -- but if my choices are more broad, I prefer dehydrated, spiced, roasted meat or jerky to either nuts or fruit.

On normal paleo days, I'd definitely go for jerky... but I'm doing the Whole30 challenge this month, and they don't allow jerky. :( I've been pretty hungry between meals lately, and my parents bought a whole bunch of fruits & nuts... hence the dilemma. :P – Esther Jan 9 2012 at 17:59
What about tinned sardines? Or frying up some bacon and taking that with you? Fruit tends to make me hungrier due to the sugar content, and I find nuts/nut butters very addictive; I defer to Chris Kresser's article when I'm having a craving... chriskresser.com/… – Christina Jan 10 2012 at 16:14

I have two hands so I can hold almonds in one and a banana in the other. If I had a third it would be holding dark chocolate.

I never eat nuts. They have way too much oxalate and a poor Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio--two problems that are very important in my diet. I believe fruit is a healthier choice than nuts for most people, but still not a great snack option by itself because many fruits can cause blood sugar spikes and dips -- an issue for many people, including me. I will only eat fruit if it is accompanied by some good protein and fat--preferably with meat as part of my regular meal, but yogurt or a slice of cheese will do, especially if snacking. I also try to eat non-starchy fruits like berries, not bananas, when I eat fruit as a snack. Most of the time, however, I find a slice of meat is the best snack, accompanied by some re-tooling of my meal plan to make snacking unnecessary.

I'm also nuts over fruit, but raw macadamias only. And thinking that each handful is $$$ helps me remember that snacking is in general a bad habit and I just need to eat more real actual food with my actual meals.

I find it easier to overeat on nuts than fruit... so if I'm home, I'd choose fruit. But if it's a packed snack, then nuts as I will only have a limited amount.

I do nuts now since I am lower carb and it is winter, but I also swear that macadamia nuts help me lose weight, everyday I have 1-2 ounces of them I lose weight, and they keep me really full. I also tend to eat fruit more when it is in season, so in the summer I eat much more fruit, whatever it is ripe.

I wish I could limit myself to just 1-2 ounces of macadamia nuts. They're like crack for me. Once I start, I can't stop. – gydle Jan 9 2012 at 17:03
Yeah, nuts are like crack for me, too. I can eat a 10oz bag of pistachios by myself in one sitting -_- – Esther Jan 9 2012 at 17:55
Yeah mac nuts are addictive. I used to be able to eat waaay more, but somehow I self regulated over time.. haha if only I could do that with other things :-p – Jackie Jan 10 2012 at 15:59

Nuts over fruit, but these days, I find reaching for another coffee with some ghee and/or coconut oil works better to quash cravings. When I crave something salty, I tend to go for Macadamia, so beyond that, I see if I have something that would work. @Work that would mean jerky, at home, maybe I'll fry up a slice or two of bacon.

nod nod Earl Grey with coconut cream works, too!!! – Firestorm Jan 10 2012 at 15:27
Oh sure, I've done various teas with coconut as well. I've been enjoying Tulsi Chai Masalas as of late. Can also do hot chocolate the same way too. – raydawg Jan 10 2012 at 22:15

My favorite is fruit, apple or banana, with nut butter! Why choose anything less.

Since I eat low carb nuts would win out for me as they fit into my plan much better. I stick to macadamia nuts because they are simply perfection but will eat some walnuts/pecans/almonds that have been sprouted.

I don't know which is better, I'd be curious to hear other answers too, but right now I go with the one I feel like eating the most at that time.

That's not a bad decision tree you got going there. – Shari Bambino Jan 10 2012 at 1:37

Taste-wise : nuts. Health-wise : fruits. I get lot of problems from nuts, not that much from fruit.

Nuts are high in pufa, Ω6 and phytic acid and easy to overeat.

I definitely choose fruits over nuts these days. Sugar and vitamins always sound good to me and keep me in a fed state throughout the day.

I include fruit in my yogurt and as the first course in my main meal. If I feel like eating nuts, which averages once or twice per week, I break up 3 pecan halves onto the yogurt.

I snack about once a week and it's usually a can of sardines.

One and a half pecans? I've seen rats in my alley that can eat more than that. – Casey Jan 9 2012 at 21:36
@Kent Cowgill, I'm just not a nuts person. I'm in the fruit-loving category all the way but I discipline myself not to overdo. The only nuts I like are a (very) few pecans, hazelnuts or pistacchios. – Nance Jan 9 2012 at 22:28

I tend to choose nuts, because fruit give me some, ahem, digestive issues most of the time (plus I have some allergies).

But if that weren't the case, I'd take fruit because, just for me personally, it's fewer calories and equally addictive (i.e, if I'm going to be tempted to overdo it, better to eat three apples than a crate of almonds), though I'd shy away from the sugar-bombs no matter what because they really do give me blood sugar regulation problems (damn you, mangoes!).

Either way, they aren't foods I should approach hungry or drunk.

Random comment, I've been harping on the calories a lot recently, but I'm definitely not blind to everything else, I just think nuts and fruit are both paleo candy, i.e., they shouldn't be the staple of your diet and are foods that tend to be over-eaten and cause people to have trouble. So, when it comes to paleo candies, I def. take calories into account. – Krisha C. Jan 9 2012 at 17:28

"Paleo candies" -- great description! I haven't thought of them that way, but now that you mention it, I can totally see the correlation. Sweet and chewy, or sweet and crunchy, they sure are treats. Although generally more nutritious than actual candy, but still, I see your point. :) – Esther Jan 9 2012 at 17:57

NUTS!! but this seems to be a problem when i step onto the scale. i think that nuts are my weakest spot. i love them and cant get enough of them! whenever i pick up the bag of nuts its not too long before they are all gone.

I eat nuts over fruit but very few. I try to reach for the salami or sliced roast beef first. Fructose is not my friend--gives me cravings.

nuts are better, fruit make you hungry latter on

it depends if you eat only 1 fruit, then you're probably right! – Paul Jan 9 2012 at 22:07

I try not to snack. If I have to, it is nuts over fruit.
