Through experimenting I've pretty much ruled out the fact that dairy is causing me to breakout. Normally I have clear skin but I would say once every few months or so there will be a whole day where I eat pretty badly, like a really busy day where I'll grab fast food, followed by a family members birthday dinner with cake or something. Sure enough a day or 2 later my skin breaks out with some acne and generally just doesn't look good. Out of curiousity, besides dairy, what are big skin offenders of the SAD.

Nuts, anything with gluten. – Korion Jan 10 2012 at 8:35

Possibly refined oil. This you will get in the fast food, whatever you eat.

I would generally say that anything gut-irritating might also worsen the skin.

In my case the culprits are:

  • anything from cows (dairy and meat)

  • egg whites

  • nightshades

  • nuts

But once the gut is healed, small amounts should be ok again.

Not part of SAD per say but stress is one thing I notice has a huge impact on my skin. And if i've eaten crappy inflammatory foods I tend to feel guilty or anxious about it so that brings a double whammy for breakouts and spots.

I'm sort of in the same boat with dairy not being the root cause through experimentation.

In my experience, the biggest cause (possibly due to food, or whatever, doesnt really matter) is excess sebum secretion. I find I breakout for around a week whenever I radically switch up my diet (normally going from cutting to bulking for example) - probably due to a hormonal reaction to the change in food intake. Nothing to do with milk.

Generally there's nothing you can do about this other than exfoliate & moisturise (don't omit the second part of that advice, moisturising is important) to help stop sebum getting clogged up under dead skin cells.

Hope this helps.

p.s. I recommend you google this. The title of this question was pretty poor for your needs - especially here. All the other comments seem to be the usual scare-mongering around gluten (yawn) – heavyarms Jan 10 2012 at 9:01
Vit A in high enough doses with counter act the sebum. – cliff Jan 10 2012 at 15:10
I found when I stopped wearing make up and stopped washing my skin things cleared up. – Sarah Jan 10 2012 at 16:21
GOOD ADVICE, I agree. i spent years trying to figure out my acne/cystic acne problem and nothing actually helps unless i eat a very monotonous repetitive diet w/o varying macros – Mallory Jan 10 2012 at 18:40

I think this is highly individual, I guess I don't have problems with dairy. On the other hand, nuts, too much chocolate, too much spicy food, oranges and sometimes even too much ginger cause acne for me.

I found when I stopped eating gluten my skin cleared up almost immediately and I haven't has issues since. Also caffeine and sugar combination for some reason gets me.

Cake or burger buns would do it! Wheat gluten definitely aggravates acne - and it's no good just having a small portion. Much less likely to be nuts, which, in moderation, should be fine, and I wouldn't count as junk. NB Peanuts are NOT nuts - they're legumes, and definitely problematic for lots of folks..

Lack of sleep really effects me. When I finish a week of on-call I normally get one or two.

Too much sugar makes me break out.
