I have a two and a half month old baby boy who I cannot breastfeed for medical reasons. I am new to the Paleo lifestyle, My husband and I are starting this weekend with our 3 and 2 year old after I go grocery shopping for some meat! My son is on infant formula, and though I would rather breastfeed, I cannot. I found some homemade formula recipes here: http://www.westonaprice.org/childrens-health/recipes-for-homemade-baby-formula I am wondering if anyone used the commercial formula recipe and what they thought of it, since I have ALOT of formula, though I am not opposed to just making my own formula too. Also, if you used any of the other recipes, how did your child take to them? Thank you so much!

I make the homemade formula. I slowly introduced it in small portions and increased the ratio slowly over about a week. Just like anything else sometimes their tummies need a slow transition. She has been on it for the past 3 months and is 9 months old now. She was only breastfed prior to 6 months but needed MORE since my supply has always struggled so I started supplementing some. She gets about 75% homemade RAW mik formula now and 25% breastmilk. Good luck and there are a couple great videos on youtube for making it. I make a batch every other morning. You get the hang of it and a rhythm after just a few times. Good luck!

Brittany, Thanks for the comment! Where did you get all the ingredients to make yours? and (if you know) whats your monthly cost to do it? – Molly Jan 12 2012 at 18:09

I know how you feel. My son was breastfed till he was 2 months old, then my younger sister passed away and my milk supply was gone. The grief and trauma of it caused it to dwindle away. So, my son had to go on formula. Nothing worked. He became very colicky and threw up every formula we tried. Then my friend offered me some of her frozen breastmilk that she had in her freezer...and let me tell you...I had my happy baby back. He was on formula for a few weeks following the death of my sister, and then we started looking into donated breastmilk. I asked my midwife about it and my lactation consultant that I was working with. There are several organizations that you could look into and proper things to ask each donor (Human Milk 4 Human Babies and Eats on Feets. Both on facebook). If you are uncomfortable, alot of donors will offer to show you their blood work to prove they are clean. Also, you can flash pasterize their milk if you want. I haven't ever needed to. My son has been on donated milk for 3 months now and he is thriving! I looked into the Weston A Price formulas and was going to do that if I ever got in a crunch finding donors...but I never have! So many woman have milk that they are just eager to get rid of so they don't have to dump it! Here's a small story of my little man and his last donor (it made news!) http://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?fbid=10150459691362013&set=a.10150227259932013.317213.611082012&type=1&theater
