I'm curious about the demographics of the paleo community. Is this information available? I'm interested in these types of demographics:

  • Age: Average age of a paleo person? Would it be good to see this number lowered significantly?
  • Gender: Are men more likely to be paleo? I was initially surprised at the number of ladies posting on this site and others, but I was probably biased.
  • Income: Eating paleo can be expensive, are paleo wealthier than average?
  • Location: Is paleo more popular in the urban/rural areas? Even though rural areas may have better access to fresh/raw foods? Western vs non-Western countries?
  • Political Views: I don't want to get into a political debate, just curious if we lean to the left or right.
  • Race: Are most people white? Is this more of a socioeconomic factor?
  • Religion: Atheist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim? I imagine the dietary restrictions of the last three may make paleo more difficult to follow.

Edit, I forgot to add my own details.

  • Age: 23
  • Gender: Male
  • Income: 60s, Computer Science grad
  • Location: Houston, TX
  • Political Views: Libertarian
  • Race: Caucasian (mixed German, Irish, etc)
  • Religion: Non-religious

Another edit, Caveman Bob posted this link http://www.tfaforms.com/228736 if you are interested in taking a paleoish survey on government involvement in food.

Age: 21. I was done with alcohol when I was 20 but I still like to go out for a drink with friends once in a Blue Moon (see what I did there?).
Gender: Female last time I checked.
Income: Nonexistent. I'm a college student but I can still afford food through this magical little piece of plastic called a credit card.
Location: I've been having a love affair with Los Angeles for the last 18 years. Vitamin D supplementation? Wut iz dat?
Political views: Somewhat in the middle. Liberal on some things, conservative on others. But I hate politics so I tend to stay away from it.
Race: Filipino (Asian), with some Chinese and Portuguese. But I'm very detached from my roots, unfortunately. Never met another Filipino Paleo-er, although Filipinos do love coconuts and cooking food in pork fat. My grandfather was extremely fit (lived to be 92) and looked like Jon Hamm when he was younger.
Religion: Catholic. There are some things I don't agree with but I still go to church every Sunday like a good little girl *cough.*

It would be cool if Patrik or someone could set up a survey style question in this regard. It doesn't help me much to scroll down the list of answers. Is that possible? Or any way to collate info from profiles?

Marital Status: Happily Married

Political: Conservative (though always try to see things from the other perspective, too...I like some things about the Liberal/Democrat side, just do not outweigh the things I dislike).

Race: White (Spanish/Irish Ancestry)...though frankly: I've never seen a white person or a black person, some are more peachy colored, some are more chocolate colored, some are more tanned, but we are all the same beautiful type through and through.

Age: 29

Gender: Male

Income: above median for location, Software QA

Political Views: Near center on political compass, always a tiny bit to the left, and vary a little up or down. Consider myself independent as all the named political factions annoy me in one way or another.

I also created some statistics based on age and gender from all the answers here. Wanted to do more based on race, Location, etc but would cost too much time. Here my findings though:

alt text

Pretty interesting. Quite some more women than men, wouldn't have thought that.

Gender + Age groups:

alt text

Most people are between 18 and 34, something I am not really surprised about.

alt text

Not the usual graph, but pretty useful. Shows the Minimum and Maximum Age (15 & 16 and 64 & 65 respectively), the Median (where green and red meets) and Quantile 1 and Quantile 3 (1/4th are younger then the lower end of the red box and 1/4th are older then the upper end of the blue box)

Findings here: More women then men and men seem to be slightly older then the women folk on paleohacks. Oh and as a last interesting numbers, the Average age is: 29.36 for Women, 31.49 for men and 30.19 overall. The Sample Size is exactly 100.

Like I said I would want to use more of the Data like Location, Race and Income, but unfortunately it would take me ages and don't have that much time. This was really interesting I have to say.

Certainly don't mind sharing my information.

  • 28 years old.
  • Male.
  • Student / Part-time worker.
  • Currently living at home while attending college, but purchase all my own food and pay bills for utilities / phone / etc... I make it work.
  • My home is in Berkeley, California, a few blocks from the Downtown area. Close enough to hometown markets, farmers' markets, and establishments like Whole Foods and Berkeley Bowl.
  • Politics is touchy... I would say I usually vote democrat, but am not hardcore left. I can see the weaknesses of either side's argument and usually (unfortunately, in this age), pick what I believe to be the lesser of two evils.
  • I am caucasian - Irish/Hungarian (flavored with a small mix of other backgrounds) by descent.
  • Religion is also something I usually don't like going into just in general, but I currently consider myself an Agnostic Christian Existentialist.

Male

Information Security (Virus/Encryption/Patching)

Tampa Bay area of Florida

Libertarian / Social Anarchist

Welsh/Scot/Breton (in order of concentration), with some German (1/8th, going back to 2 German GGGrandparents), and 1/16th Cherokee (Dad's Grandmother was Cherokee).

Christian - I tend to not "hang out" with many Believers mostly because my social views are so far against the Evangelical views... and I've not been to church in a while due to this awkwardness.

Interesting idea. It looks like we're all pretty young so far. I really like the idea that our generation may bring a growing percentage of folks who will no longer accept the conventional wisdom that has been offered to us. Personally:

  • Age: 24
  • Gender: Male
  • Income: 40s, IT tech
  • Location: Denver, CO
  • Political Views: I really try to keep my world contained to what I touch and experience day to day. Politics seem to cause a lot of frustration in a lot of people, when they have very little say in them day to day.
  • Race: Caucasian (French/English)
  • Religion: Agnostic though somewhat spiritual (regular yoga practice, meditation, ecstatic dance)

I'm especially curious about the income part; I don't think I could follow this diet if I made any less, I'm just not creative enough with things like canned tuna.

Facebook provides analytic for fan pages and while I can only speak for my own, the results have consistently shown some trends.

A full 25% are female aged 25-35. Slightly less (~20%) are female aged 35-45. Males in the same age ranges represent the bulk of the male population.

Teenagers and older adults (55 and up) represent the smallest fraction.

Age: 20

Gender: Female

Income: 4-months of the year at a chocolate company/farm. Ya'll jealous.

Occupation: Student (dietetics major with a statistics minor, after half a degree of microgiology and biochemistry).

Location: Between British Columbia (the Island) and Montreal (Quebec).

Political Views: Relatively liberal. Had a generally scary experience volunteering for the NDP, had an equally weird experience volunteering for the green party (didn't know Elizabeth May was such a Catholic), BC liberals are basically conservatives, Conservatives are the worst. So, not really satisfied with anything.

Race: Irish, Chinese, English, Scottish. Born into China town, raised in super-English farmland.

Religion: Raised atheist, actually (we are quite few and far between). Still an active atheist.
