I find there's no good term for someone who is paleo. The most common is to use "paleo" as a noun, as in: "he's a paleo." That works within the paleo community, but will most likely be confused with a political ideology in the outside world. "Paleo dieter" or "eater" specify the context, but they restrict it to nutrition only (whereas paleo also encompasses things like exercise and sunlight). Also, using the word "diet" immediately associates you with the fad weight loss diets.

The best I can come up with is "paleo health adherent", or any good synonym, e.g., "enthusiast", "advocate", "follower", etc. This captures that paleo is a complete long-term lifestyle framework. Still, this is a bit clunky, I wish there was a more concise term.

Any suggestions? How do you describe your health positions?

Dang it! I just finished training my family to call what I do "Paleo". If I change it, they will just be confused... – Dave S. Apr 15 2011 at 14:37

I like "paleo", but then "primal" sounds macho and appeals to my testosterone. "Hugans" is really cool, but would require too much explaining. My choice is based upon all the common sense that goes with eating/living this way. I just tell people I eat "Real" food!I've found that folks are more accepting of that without any prejudices or defensiveness. At least that's what's worked for my encounters, especially with my SAD family. If they want more info, I begin telling them about Dr. Harris' PaNu plan and remarkably most of them agree with it although not many will follow it.

Nice comment. I also eat Real Foods .. foods that don't come in packages, boxes, packets, bags, or loaves. That's what I usually tell folks. – Hayduke Feb 24 2010 at 18:11
I refuse to say any diet name, those are fads. I eat real food – Stephen-Aegis Jun 15 2010 at 17:01

considering that I don't think of "paleo" as a diet, I call myself a homo sapien. Everyone else is off track and on diets, not me! I just do my best to eat human food.

Paleo; it's a little more generic than Primal, which I think is pretty closely associated with Mark Sisson's particular program.

I'm inspired to start telling people I'm a Realistic Eater...

If it is not Real, then it is not in my Meal.
