Saw this on Facebook today. It's got a couple of minor issues with it, but overall it's not bad. So what do you think? Is it just a funny graphic? Or is it darn near close to being a good overview of the paleo diet?

I saw this first on reddit.com/r/Paleo a few days ago in a less slick format, but I'm not sure that was the exact origin. – JitzGrrl Jan 12 2012 at 0:08

But are flowcharts paleo? – Matt Jan 12 2012 at 0:16
Good background for my laptop. – a mesmerizing trickster Jan 12 2012 at 1:26
first saw it here: yfrog.com/z/kecf9ljj was a link from the balanced bite's facebook page – Laura Jan 12 2012 at 1:38

I think cave paintings are just pictorial flowcharts. Pre-powerpoint presentations. – gydle Jan 12 2012 at 14:27

They left out "is it organic" ?

From a flowcharting perspective, it's wrong since there are two arrows coming from "yes" after "is it a fruit or a vegetable" but from a paleo perspective, it's really good and highly amusing.

where's "lard" as oil?? and "avocado" is and oily veggie (with tons of carbs, which exclude it from being an "oil"; the original author should've put in "avocado oil" to clear up potential misunderstanding

Avocado has "tons of carbs"? A whole avocado has 15 carbs. I wouldn't consider that "tons", even for this LC-Paleo. – Joshua Jan 18 2012 at 21:33
that's true; i forgot my pov is zc :) i sure do miss avocado – justin Jan 19 2012 at 17:38
also, lard had a face so it's up there with the meat. – Moonablaze Jan 24 2012 at 11:24
It has much less than 15 if you subtract out the fibre (as us Europeans are prone too). – borofergie Aug 20 at 14:00

The only problem I have with it is that it depicts foods as being in one of two groups: paleo or not. Paleo is a spectrum; better to give out some arbitrary score to paleo foods. And of course the score scale varies from person to person so it's impossible to generalize! Individual diets for everybody!

But corn and wheat and beans and such are plants, aren't they? – a mesmerizing trickster Jan 12 2012 at 1:28
replace "plants" with "dark green leafy"? – justin Jan 14 2012 at 23:26
I think the point of the plate is that after you get rid of the grains don't over-think it. – Nance Jan 15 2012 at 0:24
BTW, the plate is from Fitbomb.com – Nance Jan 15 2012 at 0:36
The green side should say "vegetables". – Michael B Jul 5 at 15:38

Overall I think it's cute and a nice representation except for the "is it fruit or vegetable tree which is inadequate IMO and could lead people to thing things that are not acceptable are. A lot of people think of legumes as vegetables. Not sure "don't eat white potatoes unless you're skinny" is quite right either but maybe that's nitpicking?

I'm so tired of this pro-sweet potato bias. What gives? – Paul Jan 12 2012 at 0:16

Yeah, I was surprised at the ignorance on display when I polled Y!A Vegan & Vegetarian, on how many servings of fresh fruit and vegetables they averaged in a day. About half of them included "beans" of some sort in their replies /facepalm – Nemesis Jan 12 2012 at 0:23

White potato discrimination, I have never understood it. They are really not that different to the sweet potato. – Matt Jan 12 2012 at 0:24

White potatoes are not "toxic" and the glycemic index of the two is around the same. I would not call either a cheat. – Matt Jan 12 2012 at 0:32

Not a cheat Paleo_Pal but a full on meal. – ROB Jan 12 2012 at 1:41
